The Science of Running

They’re a meet day mainstay, though the faded, burgundy leather boat shoes befit a man who owns a closet full of Bermuda—rather than running—shorts. But to Naugatuck High cross country and track coach Bill Hanley, nautical footwear is as essential as a pair of Nikes. “What I’ll do is when I go to meets, I’ll wear Sperry Topsiders because they don’t have a lot of support,” he explains. “So on Saturdays, as I’m running around the course … I’m strengthening my lower legs.” And all this time I thought it was a fashion statement. I should have known better. See, Hanley, a special education science teacher at NHS, is a man of reason, and there’s a very good reason why he rocks those white-soled, bow-tied beauties.

NEW HAVEN — It was a call made for the good of the team, the kind of decision a coaching staff can only make when it has veteran runners who are both unselfish and clutch. Woodland coaches Jeff Lownds and Tim Shea scratched senior Brandon Fowler from the 300-meter dash at Saturday’s indoor track and field State Open at the New Haven Athletic Center, hoping to conserve his energy for the anchor leg of the four-by-400 meter relay. Fowler was seeded 13th in the 300, a long shot to crack the top six and qualify for the New England championships, but it was his last chance to run his best individual event.

Woodland boys’ track second in Class M

NEW HAVEN — He’s an oddity at the start line: Standing erect, while his fellow hurdlers crouch in their blocks, legs cocked like the gun about to signal the beginning of their race. Despite—or, perhaps, because of—his unorthodox posture, Woodland’s Brandon Fowler posted the fourth-fastest time in the 55-meter hurdles at Friday’s Class M indoor track and field championships at the New Haven Athletic Center then finished third in the 300 and anchored the second-place four-by-400 meter relay team. The senior’s efforts helped the Naugatuck Valley League champion Hawks tally 37 points and finish second overall, behind only mighty host Hillhouse High.
