BRISTOL — The Woodland girls’ basketball team knew it would be stumbling into the Naugatuck Valley League tournament, after consecutive losses to Holy Cross, Ansonia and Torrington. But after Wednesday’s 56-26 blowout defeat at St. Paul Catholic, a fourth straight loss to close the regular season, the Hawks (13-7, 12-7 NVL) appear to be in freefall.

The Black and Gold mustered a pitiful nine first-half points en route to their worst offensive output and most lopsided defeat of the year. The Falcons (18-2, 17-2 NVL) got a game-high 17 points, including three treys, from Chelsea Mone in the win.

Woodland registered only nine field goals all night, none from behind the arc. Heather Framski accounted for four of them and scored a dozen points.

With the loss, the Hawks slipped in the NVL rankings and will be seeded fifth in the league tourney, which begins Saturday at Holy Cross. Ansonia (13-7, 13-6 NVL) vaulted ahead of Woodland and into the No. 4 spot Wednesday by beating Seymour, 58-31. The two teams will meet in a first-round contest, at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Chargers won four in a row down the stretch and swept the regular-season series with the Hawks, winning, 48-41, Jan. 5 and 47-34 Feb. 9. Woodland managed to stay ahead of Wilby (13-7, 12-7 NVL) by virtue of a 43-39 win over the Wildcats in the season-opener, their only regular-season meeting.
