Word from the Woods: Week of May 14


Boys’ Tennis
The Woodland boys’ tennis team split four matches last week, defeating Sacred Heart last Wednesday, 6-3, and Wilby Tuesday, 5-4, but losing to Crosby last Thursday, 6-3, and Watertown Monday, 9-0. Pat Bradley earned a win as the number-one singles player Tuesday with an 8-1 victory. Stephen Pec, Stew Wilson, and Ahmed Galal also recorded singles wins on Tuesday. Pat Dietz and Kyle Beynor teamed to record a pair of doubles victories against Crosby and Wilby. Jeremy Rosa and Mike Ventimiglia, Pec and Wilson, and Galal and Chris Zmuda also earned doubles wins during the week. The Hawks hold a 7-7 record heading into the final week of the season, which includes matches against Crosby, Wolcott, Sacred Heart, and Holy Cross.

Track and Field
The Woodland boys’ track and field squad eked out its final Naugatuck Valley League victory of the season, defeating Torrington, 78-72, Tuesday in Torrington. The score was the narrowest margin of victory of the season for the boys, who won the Brass Division title with an 11-1 NVL mark. Event winners for the Hawks included the 4-by-100 relay team, Brandon Fowler in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Dan Park in the 200 and triple jump, and Kyle Cranney in the 3,200. The girls were set to host Torrington and Holy Cross Wednesday in their final NVL meet of the season. Both squads will host Platt Tech and O’Brien Tech Tuesday before the NVL championships in Beacon Falls May 25.

Anthony Memoli continued to shoot Woodland’s lowest scores of the season last week, earning medals in matches against the Ansonia/Derby Co-op team Thursday and Crosby Thursday. Memoli carded a 38 in each of the matches and lead his squad to a pair of victories. This week, the Hawks will take on Kennedy, Sacred Heart, Wilby, and Northwestern in preparation for May 26’s NVL tournament.
