TORRINGTON — The Woodland football team traveled to Torrington last Friday night in search of its first win of the season.

The Hawks held the Red Raiders in check early, as Torrington scored just 6 points in the first quarter. But the Red Raiders exploded for 20 unanswered points in the second quarter en route to a 40-15 win.

“We could move the ball between the 20s pretty well but just kept shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties,” Woodland head coach Chris Moffo said.

Torrington’s Brandon Reiff started the scoring off with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first. Dylan Myrie added touchdown runs of 65, 45 and 74 yards in the second quarter to give Torrington (4-4) a 26-0 lead at halftime.

Woodland (0-8) struck first in the third quarter as senior captain Issac Negron scored from 11 yards out to make it 26-7. Negron was 1 yard shy of yet another 100-yard game rushing for the Hawks, who average 231.4 yards per game on the ground.

Myrie scored two more times in the second half to end any hopes of a comeback before Woodland’s Edit Krivca put the ball in the end-zone for the first time in his varsity career on a 3-yard run to account for the 40-15 final score.

“Edit is a player on the rise for us. He will go and block guys twice his size and not think twice about it. He is always coming to practice to work and it is showing on the field. He has earned more touches on offense for our team,” Moffo said.

Krivca averaged over 8 yards per carry against Torrington.

Senior captain Cody Doyle had a quiet night, for his standards, in the tackles category, but was able to make an impact on special teams by blocking a kick.

“Cody is one of if not the hardest worker on the team. He always puts in the work and is a lead-by-example kind of kid,” Moffo said.

Woodland will play Kennedy Friday night at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.
