Fortier, Woodfield earn GNAC honors

NEW HAVEN — Naugatuck’s Gillian Fortier and Steven Woodfield earned All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference honors.

Fortier was named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball first team for the second year in a row.

The sophomore infielder for Albertus Magnus College led the team in hitting (.387), on base percentage (.511), slugging percentage (.495), triples and hits (43). She became the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career hits, doing so faster than anyone else at the school in just 68 games.

Fortier was also named the Female Athlete of the Year for Albertus Magnus for the 2015-16 school year.

Woodfield, a freshman, was named to the All-GNAC second team in tennis. He also became the first player in school history to be named GNAC Rookie of the Year.

Woodfield went 8-3 overall at No. 5 singles for the Falcons and was voted GNAC Rookie of the Week on three occasions.

The eight wins in singles play were the highest on the team. He also earned seven wins at No. 3 doubles.

CIAC honors scholar-athletes

CHESHIRE — The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletics Conference honored senior student-athletes for exemplary academic and athletic careers at the 33rd Annual CAS-CIAC Scholar Athlete Banquet May 1.

Naugatuck High School seniors Jenna Massicotte and Mark Zamani, and Woodland Regional High School seniors Bianca Poehailos and Sean McAllen were chosen as their respective school’s CIAC Scholar-Athletes.

The program recognizes two high school senior student-athletes — one boy and one girl — from each member high school whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievement are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage.

Post 17 announces registration for baseball

NAUGATUCK — The American Legion Post 17 baseball program is holding registration for the senior and junior teams Sunday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Post 17 Hall, 21 Cedar St.

Players must live in or have at least one parent living in Naugatuck, Middlebury, Beacon Falls or Prospect. Senior players cannot turn 19 years old during the 2016 calendar year.  Junior players cannot turn 17 years old during the 2016 calendar year. The registration fee is $150.

Post 17 is also looking for coaches for the junior team.

Naugatuck Pop Warner holding registration

NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck Pop Warner is holding signups for football and cheer May 21.

Signups are at Hop Brook School, 75 Crown St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Naugatuck will be part of the Pop Warner Division 3, which is an age-based structure with no scale. Naugatuck offers five divisions: flag (ages 5 to 6) Mitey- Mite (U8), Jr. Pee Wee (U10), Pee Wee (U12) and Unlimited (U14).

Registrations frees are $175 for tackle football and cheer, $75 for flag football or tiny mite cheer, and $350 maximum family. Financial assistance is available. For more information, call (203-525-1170 or email naugypopwarner@yahoo.com.

Hall of Fame announces Class of 2016

NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Hall of Fame has chosen the next class of inductees.

The Naugatuck Hall of Fame Committee announced the inductees for the Class of 2016 are: Chris Martin (swimming), Henry Lee (baseball), Bill Hicock (baseball), Alison Rossi (volleyball, basketball, softball), Fred Scheithe (coaching), and Scott Robinson (community volunteerism).

The inductees will be honored at the 45th annual Naugatuck Hall Of Fame Awards Banquet in October.

Softball league holding registration

PROSPECT — The Prospect Women’s Softball League is holding registration for the 2016 season.

Players must be 18 years old prior to June 1. There is no automatic registration. Women who played last year must register again. The fee is $15 for Prospect residents and $20 for non-residents. Prospect residents must submit proof of residency.

Registration can be done by mail or online at prospectrec.com. Mailed registrations must be postmarked by June 6 and can be mailed to Prospect Women’s Softball League C/O Kimberly A. Tompkins, 10 Rozum Circle, Prospect, CT 06712. A $5 late fee applies if mailed after June 6.

The summer season begins the week of June 20 and continues through the last week of August. The league plays one to two games per week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and rain dates are scheduled at field availability.
