Braves win UCLL championship

NAUGATUCK — The Union City Little League Braves won the championship against the Marlins, 4-0, Monday night at the Joe Joy Complex.

Aidan Alexander pitched for the Braves and was one batter short of a complete-game shutout. Alex Sosa came on to get the final out.

Aidan Alexander also hit a homerun over the fence. Joel Alexander had a double and Alex Sosa, Brady Evon, Lucas McKenney and Nick Jennings all had hits.

Ryan Sutherland pitched for the Marlins. Ryan Galiette and Joshua Redding each had a hit for the Marlins.

Braves head coach Mark Nofri said, “I am very proud of these kids and what they have accomplished all year. It was a pleasure to coach these kids, and they were great to be around all season. Just a great bunch of kids.”

The Braves will play the Peter J. Foley Little League champions, the Giants, at Peter J. Foley for the town championship.

Hop brook announces qualifying for championship

NAUGATUCK — Qualifying for the 2015 Hop Brook Club Championship will begin on July 6 and run through July 19.

All players in the men’s division must play 18 holes. The ladies will have a nine-hole qualifier. Match play will begin on July 20. The entry fee is $20, which includes the championship scramble Aug. 16. Defending champions, Nick Tribanas and Stephanie Slekis, are exempt from qualifying.

Naugatuck residents make All-Academic Team

NEW HAVEN — Naugatuck residents Arber Mehmedi, Richard Mitchell and Riker Mitchell were named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s All-Academic Team for the 2014-15 school year.

Mehmedi and Mitchells are student-athletes at Albertus Magnus College. To make the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, complete at least one full season of competition at a GNAC institution, and be of sophomore status academically.
