NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck golf team continued to put up solid rounds as they defeated Woodland, 171-188, at Hop Brook Golf Course on Monday. Nick Tribanas was the medalist, shooting a 38 on the par-36 course.

“It’s nice to see everyone doing a little better,” Naugatuck coach Craig Blanchard said. “A decent score for us is around a 177 but lately we have brought that down a few strokes.”

Brendan Waldron shot a 42 against Woodland with Tyler Sounanthanum posting a 45 and Matt Jackson recording a 46. Dan Capone finished up with a 54.

Naugatuck hit another 171 on Tuesday but was outplayed by one of the league favorites in Watertown as the Indians shot a 165.

“We have really been taking strokes off our game,” Blanchard added. “But a team like Watertown, one of the league favorites, has a couple of guys who can really hit the long ball, Eddie Hill and Joe DaSilva. On the last hole DaSilva drove it on the green and was shooting for an eagle. He ended up with a three on the hole but that goes to show you the power that a team like Watertown has.”

Naugatuck played in the Woodland Hawks Invitational last Thursday at Oxford Greens and posted a team score of 361 with Tribanas and Jackson both posting 86s on the 18-hole, par-72 course. Waldron shot a 92 and Sounanthanum carded a 97.

“Nick is our most consistent player, hitting around 40 or 41,” Blanchard said. “Against Woodland he was the medalist at 38 and against Watertown he hit a 39. Tyler is becoming more and more consistent. He hit a 45 against Woodland and against Watertown brought it down to a 41.”

Prior to the Woodland Hawks Invitational, the Greyhounds took on league-leading Holy Cross and posted a 177 to the Crusaders’ 168. In one of the team’s best overall rounds this year, Tribanas and Sounanthanum led the team with 42s, Capone hit a 46 and Waldron came in with a 47.

“Overall we are making good progress at this point in the season,” Blanchard said. “If we can do well this week at East Mountain against Sacred Heart then we are becoming a good team. Thursday we are at Torrington where the greens are a little longer and a little faster. Then we face Watertown again at Crestbrook, where it’s a little longer and more wide open. In order for us to get better we need to play other courses and challenge ourselves.”

The Greyhounds have surely entered a challenging part of their schedule, playing seven matches in a span of 11 days. This will gear them up for the Naugatuck Valley League championships that will be played May 30.
