NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Senior Legion baseball team is showing it is a true contender in Zone 5.

Post 17 (9-4) won nine of ten games, outscoring opponents 64-21 in that span, after starting the season 0-3. Through 13 games, Naugatuck was third in Zone 5, a game behind zone leader Oakville.

Derrick Jagello led Post 17 at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, in a 10-2 victory against Danbury on Tuesday. Derek Sampaio had two hits and Will McDonald had a hit and two RBIs for Naugatuck. Griffin Browne got the win on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing just one run.

That victory followed a 6-0 victory over Shelton on Monday.  Each of Naugy’s first three batters, Jarrett Allen, Corey Plasky and Jagello, recorded two hits, while Jagello added two RBIs. Jagello also pitched six shutout innings for Post 17, allowing just four hits.

These two wins followed a minor hiccup in Naugatuck’s streak, a 4-3 loss to Washington on Sunday. In the sixth inning, Naugy allowed Washington to reach on one of its five errors in the game to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, a pinch hitter singled to center field to bring the eventual winning run home.

Plasky went 3-for-4 while Jagello went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Flynn pitched the whole way for Post 17, surrendering only one earned run and seven hits while striking out six.

Jagello’s bat has been red hot for Post 17 as of late. After a 0-for-9 stretch, Jagello went 7-for-11, proving to be another force at the top of the lineup with Plasky and McDonald.

Post 17 will need these hot bats to keep going against a tough schedule. After a matchup with winless Danbury Friday, Post 17 is scheduled to take on the other top teams in the league, Oakville, Bethel and Waterbury.
