Round of Applause

High school sports are underway, and that means it’s time for this public service announcement to remind you to GO TO GAMES. We’re lucky to have some awfully competitive teams in our area and everything is much more exciting when the crowds are bigger. I’d give anything for the football crowds to be what they were in the early ‘90s, but for all sorts of reasons that’s not the case anymore. Listen up, Naugatuck: You guys are about to open the nicest athletic complex in the entire Valley and your coach is one of the most exciting ones we’ve ever seen around here. Go watch the Greyhounds. Attention, Beacon Falls and Prospect: There’s a quarterback by the name of Tanner Kingsley who set two state records and a bunch of league records last season, and this is your last chance to see him. The other teams from these schools are awfully good, too, and don’t be surprised to see them playing for league titles in November. Go enjoy the delightful season we get around here and bring your friends or your kids to watch some games. It’s time to start making this a big deal again.

Chorus of Boos

USC and Washington State played last weekend in one of the finest displays of incompetent college football since Towson visited East Hartford last month (actually, only one of those teams looked inept). It was the late-night game on Fox Sports 1, so none of you probably watched it, but talk about the most brutal offenses you’ll see all year. I was actually tweeting back and forth with former Washington State quarterback Alex Brink during the game, and the pain was evident in his text. But, hey, it all ended well: USC lost, as everybody enjoys, and soon afterwards somebody painted “Kiffin” after the nearest fire lane. High comedy there.

Word from the Woods

Boys Soccer

The Woodland boys soccer team salvaged a 2-2 tie against Crosby on the opening day of the season at Crosby High. Tom Bethin contributed the assist on MacDonald’s goal, and freshman AJ Oliveira saved 13 shots. The Hawks fell, 7-0, to Naugatuck Thursday afternoon, and will welcome nonconference opponent Oxford on Monday. Woodland will also visit Derby on Sept. 18.
