Round of Applause
The Frozen Four was an awfully cool place to be last week. I’m sure all you faithful readers kept up with my coverage from Pittsburgh in last week’s Republican-American, so I don’t need to go over everything that happened. The Steel City was nicer than I had expected and the downtown area really was delightful. The Consol Energy Center, where the Frozen Four actually happened, and PNC Park, the home of the Pirates, are within about 15 minutes by foot, so we had to go watch a baseball game on our off night. (We’ve all decided as a group that the Pirates are now easily our second-favorite team for many reasons, not the least of which being that their closer, Jason Grilli, is affectionately called Grilled Cheese.) The people in Pittsburgh, whether they were visitors or natives, could not have been nicer to us because it sure seemed like the entire city was rooting for our Bobcats. Although things didn’t end like any of us wanted, the last four months of this hockey season was about as much fun as I’ve ever had in my life and it was awfully cool to be able to enjoy the ride with some of my best friends during my alma mater’s historic season. Go Bobcats!
Naugy Notes
Baseball
Naugy concluded an up-and-down week Monday with a 9-2 victory over Crosby to even up the Greyhounds’ record at 3-3. Adam Tavares led Naugy’s charge against the Bulldogs with three doubles and three RBI, while Scott Sill had a double and an RBI in the game. The win over Crosby came on the heels of a great offensive week for Naugy in which it scored 32 runs but only won two of three games. The ‘Hounds knocked off Sacred Heart, 8-3, last Monday before a walk-off hit by Kennedy’s Jake D’Alusio sunk Naugy in a 12-11 loss last Wednesday. Sill had three hits, including a homer, in the game. The Greyhounds rebounded the next day to hammer Wilby, 13-1, thanks to a complete game by Spencer Dreher and two-hit performances by Josh Aviles and Kyle Plasky. Naugy fell to Torrington, 7-5, on Wednesday and will visit Seymour on Friday before returning home Monday to face Woodland.
Track and Field
The Naugatuck boys earned an important sweep while the Naugy girls salvaged a split of a tri-meet Tuesday against Watertown and Wilby. The boys rebounded from their loss to Woodland in the opening meet by handily defeating the Indians, 93.5-56.5, and dominating Wilby, 145-5. The ‘Hounds won all three relays, and individual winners included Isaque Monteiro (300-meter hurdles), Nate Buie and Mick Pernell (tied in 100), Collin Reilly (800), Dan Schumacher (3,200), Pernell (high jump), Corey Andrew (triple jump), James San Angelo (shot put) and Mike Johnson (discus). The girls suffered an 80-70 loss to Watertown but defeated Wilby, 142-4. Naugy took the 4-by-100 relay, and individual winners included Ariana Alvarado (100 and 200), Madison Beasley (1,600 and 3,200) and Brianna Ritter (shot put and discus). Naugatuck’s next meet will be a quad-meet Tuesday at Holy Cross, where the ‘Hounds will face the Crusaders, Crosby and St. Paul.
Golf
The Greyhounds are set to finally begin their golf season Monday when they visit Chippanee Golf Club to take on St. Paul. They will open up their home season Tuesday at Hop Brook against Kennedy.
Word from the Woods
Baseball
Woodland earned its first two victories of the season last week by defeating Derby and Ansonia. After struggling to score runs over the first week, the Hawks exploded in a 14-3 win over the Red Raiders last Wednesday. Steve Baeder had four hits, three runs and four RBI in the game, while Anthony Scirpo chipped in with two hits, five runs and two RBI. Matt Wysocki also contributed with two hits and two runs to support Tanner Kingsley, who allowed four hits in five innings of work to get the win. Woodland followed up with a 3-2 win over Ansonia last Saturday when Baeder scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to get the victory for Anthony Ross, who didn’t allow an earned run. The Hawks saw their winning streak snapped earlier this week with consecutive defeats to Wolcott and Jonathan Law. Woodland (2-5) will visit Torrington on Friday and Naugatuck on Monday before returning home next Wednesday to face Holy Cross.
Track and Field
Both Woodland track squads continued to roll early in the season by sweeping tri-meets Tuesday against Seymour and Crosby. The boys cruised past Seymour, 117-33, and Crosby, 127-23, while the girls also beat Seymour, 94-56, and Crosby, 143-6. The Hawks boys took all three relays, including the 4-by-800-meter (Ian Chamenko, Nick Hebert, Jack Pinho, Andy Hale), 4-by-100 (Jason Rodrigues, Rahmi Rountree, Hunter Watford, Nick LaPerriere) and 4-by-400 (Hale, Daemion Powell, Pinho, LaPerriere), while individual winners included Brett Fowler (110 and 300 hurdles), Rountree (100), LaPerriere (400), Hebert (800), Pinho (1,600), Mike Lang (high jump, long jump, triple jump), Levi Fancher (javelin and shot put) and Dave LaChance (discus). The girls also took two relays, the 4-by-100 (Jazmyn Menzies, Steph Dumond, Ashley Michie, Tayler Boncal) and 4-by-400 (Boncal, Sydney Corneau, Michie, Menzies), while individual winners included Michie (100 and 200), Boncal (400), Becca Moscato (high jump), Corneau (long jump), Jiye Park (triple jump), Megan Lynch (pole vault), Nikki Tyrrell (javelin and shot put) and Erika Tyrrell (discus). Woodland is back in action Tuesday at home against Derby and Watertown in a meet that will likely end up determining the league champions.
Golf
The Hawks fell to league powerhouse Watertown, 159-199, in their first competitive outing of the season last Thursday at Crestbrook Golf Course. Two of the Indians’ four players shot below 40, including medalist Eddie Hill, who shot an even-par 36. Mike Erickson led Woodland with a 45, while Mike Classey carded a 49. Ryan Warner followed up with a 50 and Andy O’Dell posted a 55. The Hawks visited East Hampton on Wednesday before hitting their home course, Oxford Greens, for the first time this season Thursday against Northwestern. The results of those matches were not available as of this post. The Hawks will also host Sacred Heart on Monday and both Crosby and Wilby next Wednesday.
