Round of Applause

This week’s Quinnipiac hockey update is here to make sure that you watched the No. 1-ranked Bobcats whoop up on No. 13 Yale, 4-1, last Friday night on the NBC Sports Network. They’ve lost just once since Election Day (that’s a 25-game span) and are still on pace to grab the No. 1 overall seed in this month’s NCAA tournament (and, most importantly, play in the Providence regional). Quinnipiac finishes the regular season on the road this weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard before enjoying a bye week in the ECAC Hockey tournament. The Bobcats’ final home games of the season will be March 15-17 when they host a league quarterfinal series. This will be the first time in history I will be more interested in college hockey tournaments than college basketball tournaments. Hopefully I’ll be hitting the road plenty over the next five weeks (Hamden, Atlantic City, Providence, Pittsburgh, in order).

Mike Lang, Woodland’s star junior jumper, will compete at the New England championships this weekend at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Lang is seeded 10th in the long jump. We wish the best of luck to a Naugatuck Valley League triple-gold medalist.

Chorus of Boos

A Vancouver pee wee hockey coach earned himself 15 days in jail after purposely tripping a 13-year-old player in the postgame handshake line. This happened at some point last year but the moronic, 48-year-old Martin Tremblay swallowed his sentence Tuesday. You can see the video at various places on the internet (I’m a Deadspin reader, so that’s where I saw it) and there’s no denying that this idiot intentionally swiped the kid’s legs, then turned around and shouted something at the 13-year-old, who broke his wrist during the fall. The judge called it “akin to a cowardly sucker punch on an unsuspecting victim,” which is putting it fairly lightly since that unsuspecting victim was a youth hockey player 35 years this idiot’s junior. This has been your Uplifting Moment of the Day.

Word from the Woods

Boys Swimming

Woodland’s final regular-season meet against Oxford, which was originally postponed in the wake of last month’s blizzard, was finally canceled after the schools originally intended to make up the event. Instead, the Hawks used the time to prepare for this week’s NVL championships. Swim trials took place Tuesday with the diving finals set for Wednesday. The swim finals are Friday at 6 p.m. at Kennedy.

Naugy Notes

Boys Swimming

The Greyhounds dropped their final regular-season meet of the season last Friday at Torrington by a final tally of 88.5-81.5. Event winners for Naugatuck included Marcus Cruz (100-yard butterfly), George Vygoder (500 freestyle) and Eric Hanley (100 breaststroke). Naugy then turned its focus to this week’s NVL championships. Swim trials took place Tuesday with the diving finals set for Wednesday. The swim finals are Friday at 6 p.m. at Kennedy.
