Round of Applause

Big-time football in the borough is coming up Friday night. Please go. I promise, football games are still a lot of fun to go to and Friday’s will be a really good game. It was nice to see a good crowd last Saturday afternoon for Naugy’s game against Holy Cross but y’all can still do  better. These kids deserve thousands of fans like many of the coaches on each staff used to enjoy. Make it happen this Friday night.

800 minutes is a long time to play soccer without giving up a goal. But that’s how long the Woodland girls have lasted without another Naugatuck Valley League team scoring a goal against them. That’s pretty gosh darned impressive, if you ask a guy who is by no means a soccer expert. They are the well-deserved favorites heading into this weekend’s league tournament.

On the Air, On the Web

Woodland-Naugatuck football: One of the NVL’s best rivalries carries major Copper Division implications in the borough. You can listen to Bob Sagendorf and me broadcast it live on WATR 1320 AM and watr.com starting at 6:50 p.m. Friday.

After missing out on a chance to clinch another NVL Brass Division title, the Hawks (16-2) have reeled off another winning streak to take momentum heading into Saturday’s league tournament quarterfinals. Woodland closed out last week with home sweeps of Wolcott and Ansonia before beating St. Paul 3-1 on Tuesday. The Hawks swept Naugatuck on Thursday. In the victory over the Falcons, Tayler Boncal led the way with six kills and four aces while Brianna Pacileo had seven aces and three kills. Those two hitters will be crucial for the Hawks as they will likely enter the tournament as the No. 2 or No. 3 seed and will probably have to go through Seymour and Holy Cross to win the league title.

Naugy Notes

Volleyball

The momentum Naugy (7-12) had last week following consecutive sweeps of Kennedy and Wilby vanished over the last few days as four straight losses cost the Greyhounds a state tournament berth. Naugatuck lost to Crosby last Friday before 3-0 losses Monday at Terryville, Tuesday against Torrington, and Thursday versus Woodland.

Tournament Schedules

Cross Country: Naugatuck and Woodland will both compete in their state cross country championships Saturday.

Soccer: Quarterfinals of both league tournaments will be Saturday, followed by Monday’s semifinals (girls at Watertown, boys at Municipal Stadium) before the championships Nov. 1 at Municipal Stadium.

Swimming: The NVL swim trials will be Tuesday while diving finals are Nov. 1 and swim finals are Nov. 3. All competitions take place at Kennedy.

Volleyball: Quarterfinals will be Saturday at a site to be determined as of press time. Semifinals will be at Wilby either Monday or Tuesday before the championship Nov. 1 at Wilby.
