Chorus of Boos

Treehouse-Gate in Naugatuck is very possibly the most comical public issue I’ve ever encountered (see below for other laws that are less ridiculous). Here’s the quick roundup of what’s happened so far, for those of you too far in the forest to see the trees (HAHA): Naugatuck Burgess Michael Bronko built a treehouse in his backyard woods a year ago. Somebody must have snitched because all of a sudden the Zoning Commission got involved and said the treehouse is against regulations because … well, it’s not regulated (imagine that, something in our lives that doesn’t have to be government-regulated). Somehow, adding a treehouse to the list of allowable backyard structures would take months (months!) so the Bronkos either need to appeal by Sept. 22 or start getting fined. To make this even worse (or more comical), zoning enforcement officer Steven S. Macary has ordered six treehouses taken down in the last six years! I enjoy your borough, but really, Naugatuck? Government is government, I guess, so let the trivial and invasive regulation continue.

Top Five U.S. Laws That Make More Sense Than Naugatuck’s Treehouse Ban

Connecticut: It is illegal to dispose of used razor blades.

Alaska: Owners of flamingos may not let their pet into barber shops.

Minnesota: A person may not cross state lines with a duck atop his head.

New York: A person may not walk around on Sunday with ice cream in his pocket.

Florida: An elephant tied to a parking meter must have its parking fee paid.
