Naugy Notes

Softball

The Greyhounds swept three Naugatuck Valley League opponents this week before dropping a nonleague game to Bethel, 3-2, on Tuesday. Prior to that loss, Naugy beat Watertown, 7-3, last Wednesday, Ansonia, 3-0, last Friday, and St. Paul, 15-0, on Monday. In the win over the Chargers, Alexa Marucci chucked a three-hitter with seven strikeouts while Erica Bohuski had two hits and two RBI. Sarah Chandler added two hits and a run for the ‘Hounds. On Monday, Marucci allowed just two hits and struck out 10. Gillian Fortier and Chandler each had three hits and two runs, while Kara Klimaszewski notched two hits, a run, and an RBI. On Tuesday, Marucci took the Greyhounds to extra innings with her five strikeouts, but Naugy’s offense wasn’t enough. Fortier, Shannon Searles, and Sarah Chandler all contributed hits for the ‘Hounds. After a scheduled game at Derby on Wednesday, Naugy will return to divisional play on Monday against Holy Cross and May 9 at Sacred Heart. The ‘Hounds are 8-5 and are officially in the state tournament.

Boys Tennis

Naugy swept both of its matches this week to improve to 8-3 on the season and move closer to clinching a state tournament berth. Last Wednesday, the ‘Hounds shut out Watertown, 6-0, before they overcame Holy Cross, 6-3, on Monday. Singles players Nick Hernandez, Lain Burger, Mike Popescu, and Tyler Posser all recorded two wins on the week, while Jake Burrell and Jake Morrissey both picked up singles wins and Marcos Velesco earned a win in doubles. Naugatuck will host a showdown against undefeated Woodland on Thursday before a match at Watertown on Monday and against Sacred Heart on May 9.

Girls Tennis

Naugatuck won two of three matches this week to boost its record to 9-4 on the year. Last week, Naugy beat Watertown, 4-3, on Wednesday before shutting out Ansonia, 7-0, on Friday. St. Paul handed the Greyhounds their only loss of the week on Monday in a 5-2 decision. Katie Bottinick won all three of her singles matches on the week while Alexa Ramos, Lani Chucta, Mikaela Santo, Kayla Gallant, Martina Niebryzdowski, Hannah Kim, and Kayla Rotatori all won two doubles matches. Miranda Jang, Kaitlin Carter, and Andrea Jimenez each won a singles match during the week. Naugy will host Holy Cross on Monday before visiting Sacred Heart on May 9.

Track and Field

The Greyhounds’ scheduled meets against Wilby and Kennedy on Tuesday were pushed to Wednesday due to rain. Both squads will also compete at the CT Elite Night Invitational on Friday before hosting a quad meet against Holy Cross, Wolcott, and St. Paul next week. The boys meet will be May 8 while the girls will compete the following day.

Word from the Woods

Softball

The Hawks clinched another state tournament berth on Monday with an 11-5 win over Kennedy. Rachel Starkey had three hits and three RBI, Angie Wirsing had two hits, three RBI, and three runs, and Brooke Leshin had two hits, two RBI, and two runs for Woodland in the clincher. Last week, the Hawks split a pair of games against Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Woodland lost a 16-6 decision to the Crusaders last Wednesday despite two hits each from Emily Wirsing and Natalie Veneri. The Hawks rebounded last Thursday with a 4-2 win over the Hearts. Leshin had three hits, a run, and an RBI while Samantha Lee had a triple. Woodland (8-4) was set to host Wilby on Wednesday before a trip to St. Paul on Friday. The Hawks will host Watertown on Monday before a rematch with Seymour on May 9.

Boys Tennis

Woodland is still undefeated after blasting its three Copper Division opponents this week. The Hawks shut out Holy Cross last Wednesday and Kennedy on Monday while taking an 8-1 victory over Sacred Heart last Thursday. Singles players Kyle Beynor, Jimmy Tompkins, Matt Murphy, Stephen Pec, Pat Dietz, and Mike Patsiarikas all picked up multiple wins while the Chris Zmuda-Nick Rioux, Mike Ventimiglia-Johan Haile, and Pat Mulholland-Alex Tulk doubles teams also gained victories. The Hawks are now 12-0 and have clinched a state tournament berth, but are set for a tough close to the season. After visiting Wilby on Wednesday, Woodland will travel to Naugatuck on Thursday. Perhaps the team’s toughest test will be a nonleague match at Lewis Mills on Monday.

Girls Tennis

The Woodland girls won two of three matches this week to improve to 5-6 on the season. The Hawks beat Holy Cross, 4-3, last Wednesday before gaining a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart last Thursday. Woodland’s only defeat came in a 5-2 decision to Kennedy on Monday. Julia Lawton won all three of her singles matches on the week, while Salma Shitia won two of her matches and Lauren Tompkins also picked up a win. The doubles team of Ayah Galal and Jesse Erickson gained the decisive match win against the Crusaders. Erickson teamed with Emily Rioux to gain wins in two other matches, while the Dayna Chucta-Liz Martin and Hope Gavigan-Olivia Harrison duos posted victories against Sacred Heart. Woodland was set to host Wilby on Wednesday before visiting St. Paul on Friday. The Hawks will welcome Watertown on Monday.

Track and Field

Both Woodland track squads remained hot as the Hawks swept a pair of tri-meets on Tuesday. The boys crushed Holy Cross, 101-49, and Torrington, 120-30, while the girls had a closer call against the Crusaders, 78.5-71.5, and beat the Raiders, 106-44. Event winners for the boys included the 4-by-800 relay team (Adam Baz, Joe Reynolds, Andy Hale, Marc Beaulieu); the 4-by-100 relay team (Mike Lang, Tim Madormo, Jon Alarcon, Nick LaPerriere); Madormo in the 110 and 300 hurdles; Nick Hebert in the 1,600; Eric Dietz in the 400; Alarcon in the 200; Scott Lang in the javelin; and Mike Lang in the long and high jumps. Event winners for the girls included the 4-by-800 relay team (Mary Sardinskas, Audra Blewitt, Erika Tyrrell, Sydney Corneau); the 4-by-100 relay team (Jiye Park, Steph Dumond, Ashley Michie, Tayler Boncal); Bailee Graveline in the 100 hurdles; Boncal in the 400; Sardinskas in the 3,200; Nicole Tyrrell in the javelin; Ashley Riley in the long jump; and Park in the triple jump. The boys are now 10-0 while the girls are 9-1. Both teams will compete at Friday’s CT Elite Night Invite before competing in quad meets next week. The boys will host Sacred Heart, Seymour, and Derby on Tuesday, while the girls will compete at the same meet in Seymour on Wednesday.
