Girls Tennis

The Woodland girls lost two of three matches this week to fall to 3-5 on the season. After a 6-1 win over Crosby last Wednesday, the Hawks suffered a pair of 6-1 defeats to Torrington and Naugatuck. Against the Bulldogs, Rachel Mariano, Julia Lawton, Salma Shitia, and Lauren Tompkins swept the singles matches while the Liz Martin-Sydney Christensen team and the Hope Gavigan-Olivia Harrison duo took doubles matches. Only Tompkins earned victories in the Hawks’ losses to Torrington and Naugatuck. Woodland was set to host Holy Cross on Wednesday before visiting Sacred Heart on Thursday. The Hawks will host a pair of matches against Kennedy and Wilby to start next week.

Track and Field

One team is still unbeaten while another suffered its first loss on Tuesday. The boys (8-0) blew out Watertown, 102-48, while the girls (7-1) suffered an 81-69 loss to the Indians. Event winners for the boys included the 4-by-800 relay team (Nick Hebert, Marc Beaulieu, Adam Baz, and Eric Dietz); the 4-by-100 relay team (Mike Lang, Tim Madormo, Jon Alarcon, and Nick LaPerriere); Madormo in the 110 and 300 hurdles; Mike Lang in the 100, high jump, and long jump; Dietz in the 400 and 800; Alarcon in the 200; the 4-by-400 relay team (LaPerriere, Beaulieu, Madormo, and Dietz); Scott Lang in the javelin; Levi Fancher in the shot put; Dave Alves in the discus; and Mike Torselli in the pole vault. Event winners for the girls included the 4-by-100 relay team (Jiye Park, Jazmyn Menzies, Ashley Michie, and Tayler Boncal); Park in the 100 and triple jump; Boncal in the 200 and 400; Mary Sardinskas in the 3,200; Ashley Riley in the long jump; Claire Burke in the pole vault; Erika Tyrrell in the discus; and Nikki Tyrrell in the shot put. The boys now have the inside track to the Brass Division championship while the girls will need a Watertown divisional loss to get back into the hunt. Both teams will compete at the Irv Black Invitational on Friday before hosting a league meet with Holy Cross and Torrington on Tuesday.

Golf

The Hawks lost a pair of matches this week to drop to 2-4 on the season. After a 182-201 loss to Northwestern last Thursday, Woodland fell to Wolcott, 161-190, on Tuesday at Farmingbury Hills. The 190 score was the Hawks’ best of the season. Andy O’Dell led Woodland with a 45, while Mike Erickson was right behind him with a 46. Will Flormann carded a 47 and Pat O’Dell posted a 52. Woodland was set for two home matches against St. Paul on Wednesday and Naugatuck on Thursday before hosting Holy Cross on Monday.

Naugy Notes

Girls Tennis

After a pair of close losses last week, the Greyhounds rebounded with a 6-1 win over Woodland on Tuesday. Naugy suffered 4-3 losses to Torrington last Wednesday and Seymour last Friday. Hannah Kim won both of her singles matches in the two losses, while Miranda Jang and Kaitlin Carter both won singles matches against the Wildcats. The Alexa Ramos-Lani Chucta and Kayla Rotatori-Martina Niebrzydowski teams both won doubles matches against the Red Raiders. On Tuesday, Jang, Carter, and Andrea Jimenez won the top three singles matches, while the Ramos-Chucta, Rotatori-Niebrzydowski, and Mikaela Santo-Kayla Gallant squads won doubles matches. The ‘Hounds are 7-3 and were set to visit Watertown on Wednesday before hosting three straight matches, starting with Ansonia on Friday and St. Paul on Monday.

Track and Field

Both the Naugatuck track teams earned blowout victories over Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The boys won, 113-33, while the girls took a 113-31 win. Event winners for the boys included the 4-by-100 relay team (Martins, Schumacher, Simons, Alves); Colin Reilly in the 400; Muad Hrezi in the 1,600 and 3,200; Nick Moriello in the 800; the 4-by-400 relay team (Reilly, Alves, Hrezi, Moriello); Nathaniel Buie in the long jump; Jake Simons in the triple jump; Mick Pernell in the high jump; Colton Wagner in the pole vault; Mike Johnson in the shot put; and Anthony White in the discus. Event winners for the girls included the 4-by-800 relay team (Thoren, Soares, Gullotta, Allen); the 4-by-100 relay team (Roper, Kosluski, Lugo, Spencer); Carla Soares in the 110 and 300 hurdles; Jordyn Allen in the 1,600 and 32,00; the 4-by-400 relay team (Roper, Koslosky, Simmons, Hurdivant); Martin in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump; Katarina Gullotta in the pole vault and javelin; and Brianna Ritter in the shot put and discus. Both teams will compete at the O’Grady Relays on Saturday before hosting Wilby and Kennedy in a league meet on Tuesday.

Golf

Naugatuck had only one match scheduled this week, against St. Paul at Chippanee Golf Club on Tuesday, but scores were not reported. The Greyhounds will play a string of four straight matches on the road, which started Thursday against Woodland at Oxford Greens. On Monday Naugy will face Sacred Heart at East Mountain and visit Watertown on Tuesday.
