Mo’s Moments

First impressions
Naugatuck resident and Kaynor Tech freshman Logan Stone is making an impact for the Panthers. Stone went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in a run during a 12-2 win over Wamogo on April 14.

Hot streak
Woodland junior Bill Untiet has been ripping it as of late, going 4-for-7 over a two-game stretch with six RBIs. He drove in the first run of the game in the Hawks’ 10-3 upset of No. 9 St. Joseph on April 15.

300 Ks
Woodland senior Sammy Sosnovich has been putting up some big numbers in the four years as a Hawk. On April 13, she put up one of the biggest numbers in her career, recording her 300th strikeout in a 19-0 win over Ansonia. She also went 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBIs.

It’s out of here
Naugatuck junior Aryn Bombery did what any go-to player would do. When the team needed her she delivered not once but twice, belting two home runs including an eighth inning game-winner in an 8-6 extra inning win over Torrington on April 18.

Making things happen
Naugatuck senior Mike Deitelbaum just has a way of elevating his game. In a tough 11-10 loss to Watertown on April 14, the senior slugger did what he could to help his team belting two triples and a double with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Word from the Woods
Boys tennis – Woodland continued its winning ways, improving to 8-0 on the season with three straight 5-0 wins, one over Wolcott (April 14) and two over Watertown (Aprul 18). In the win over Wolcott, Kayo Niebrzydowski won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 2 singles Nick Bshara found his way to victory, 6-1, 7-5. Woodland got forfeit wins at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles. The tandem of Carter Davis and Spencer Macdowall got by easily in No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-0. In the sweep of Watertown, Niebrzydowski (8-1, 8-0), Bshara (8-1, 8-0) and Brian O’Connell (8-2, 8-3) earned wins in singles play in matches that were pro sets. The Hawks’ doubles teams of Davis-Macdowall (8-2, 8-1) and Evan Lin-Ken Arnold (8-3, 8-1) completed the sweep.
Girls tennis – Woodland is 2-1 after a tough 5-2 loss to Wolcott on April 14. Yasmeen Galal (8-4 at No. 2 singles) and the tandem of Ava Naclerio and Abigail Raffone (9-7 at No. 2 doubles) earned the wins against the Eagles. Audrey Fencil (8-3 at No. 1 singles), Vivien Mogyoros (8-6 No. 3 singles) and Laura DeGennaro (8-4 at No. 4 singles) all lost against Wolcott. The No. 1 doubles team of Rylie Montini and Isabella Mastropietro lost a tough match, 9-8. At No. 3 doubles, the team of Cori Patchkofsky and Sarah Shitia fell, 8-4.

Naugy Notes
Girls tennis – Naugatuck improved to 2-3 on the season after earning a 6-1 win over Torrington on April 18. Josephine Burke (8-0), Amy Morrissey (8-0) and Cassie Cozzi (8-2) won singles matches. In doubles, the teams of Ava DeFilippo-Sophia DeFilippo (8-1), Juliana Dwyer-Eliviah Schroeder (8-0) and Juliana Felix-Bryanna Jones (8-0) were victorious. Camryn Smith lost at No. 1 singles, 8-5.
Boys tennis – Naugatuck ripped off three straight wins to improve to 4-2. On April 14, Naugy got past Watertown, 3-2. William Zheng (6-2, 6-2) and Brian Barth (6-4, 7-5) won singles matches. The doubles team of Brandon Miranda and Manase Mutshima cliched the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win.
Track – Both teams improved to 5-0 with wins over Kennedy on April 18. The boys won, 112-38, and the girls were victorious, 113-35. The Dalton brothers led the way for the boys team with Eddie taking first in the 1,600 meters (5:16) and 3,200 meters (12:07). Luke finished a close second in both long distance runs. Brendan Lyles (52.1 seconds) and Shayne Hasipi (52.2) ran a close first and second in the 400. Jayden Bartelle was first in the triple jump (38-5.5) and javelin (148-1), and second in the high jump. Jason Costa won the 800 (2:12), Jaiden Roach was first in the 110 hurdles (17.8) and Eliezar Pena won the 300 hurdles (44.0). Alec Newsom won the shot put (38-2) and was second in the discus. Roarke Rogers was first in the pole vault (8-0) and Chance Lewis won the long jump (18-1). Naugy won all three relays, with the teams made up of the following runners: Lewis, Dan Anderson, Ryan Deitelbaum and Ethan Jones in the 4×100, 46.3; Hasipi, Lyles, Zach McCasland and Jack Healy, 3:54.9; and Max Hammond, Sazan Cermenika, Joe Cervone and Alexandre Oliveira in the 4×800. For the girls, Lauren Kropo was a triple winner in the 100 (12.2), 200 (25.1) and the 400 (57.4). Naugy owned the distance races with Connolly winning the 800 (2:44) and 1,600 (6:04). Gwen Marenghi was second in both races, and Lily Dalton was third. Susana Rego won the 3,200 (14:11) with Jayda Costa second. Divine Kabongo won the 300 hurdles (47.7) and long jump (15-6.5), and was second in the 100 hurdles. Naugy showed depth in the throws with Indya Waller taking first in the javelin (72-3) and third in the shot put while also winning the triple jump (28-10.7). Briana Rubas was first in the discus (89-6) and second in the javelin. Chloe Tome won the pole vault (7-0) and Jaesah Perry won the high jump (4-6). The 4×100 was first behind the team of Lauren Sonski, Lily Jason, Kabongo and Kropo (50.4). The 4×800 was victorious behind the quarter of Rego, Jezaiah Ramo, Tome and Costa (12:09).
