Leaps and bounds
Naugy senior Jayden Bartelle led the Greyhounds at the Robert Saulisbury Invitational indoor track meet on Dec. 30, landing a second place in the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches) and a third place in the high jump (5-10).

Just in the nick of time
Naugy senior Indya Waller had a team-high 16 points in a 51-48 overtime victory over Crosby on Dec. 30.

Clutch performer
Woodland junior Casey Mulligan had back-to-back games of 16 points against Derby on Jan. 3 (61-12 win) and Wolcott on Jan. 4 (35-30 loss).

Word from the woods:
Girls basketball – Woodland split a pair of games last week and was 4-3 as the first half of the season wound down. The Hawks ran roughshod over Derby, 61-12, on Jan. 3, led by Ireland Starziski’s 18 points and Mulligan’s 16 points. Lindsay Koliani added 10 points and Jenna Chicano chipped in with eight for the Hawks. Woodland ran into a very tough Wolcott squad on Jan 4 and came away on the losing side of a 35-30 final.
Indoor track – The Hawks competed in the Robert Saulisbury Invitational on Dec. 30. They were led by Alex Farr with a first place finish in the 600 meters (1:28.41) and Kian Sirowich, who placed second in the pole vault (12 feet). Other top 10 finishers for the Hawks were Ervin Owusu (5th, long jump), Sam Ambrocio (6th, 1000), Brian Babo (8th, shot) and Isabella Bianchini (10th, pole vault). The boys sprint medley relay finished fifth behind the team of Jaylen Goodall, Owusu, Ambrocio and Farr (3:52.54). The girls 4×800 finished sixth behind the quartet of Faye Carnemolla, Katherine Foley, Olivia McDonald and Leah Zainc (11:46.51). The 4×200 team of Bianchini, Jamie Lynn Shaffer, Kyla O’Connor and Laci Davis finished ninth.

Naugy notes:
Girls basketball – The Greyhounds were sitting at 4-4 but finding a way to pull out some close games. After already securing a pair of wins by just a basket earlier in the season, Naugy was at it again, winning a 51-48 overtime contest against Crosby on Dec. 30. Waller led the way with 16 points and Lauryn Ramalho added 12 points. Naugy couldn’t get the offense started against Ansonia and lost, 45-33, on Jan. 3. Laniah Diaz led the way with nine points.
Indoor track – The Greyhounds hit the track on Dec. 30 at the Robert Saulisbury Invitational and had a good showings from the boys and the girls. Shayne Hasipi finished second in the 600 (1:29.46) and Zach McCasland was right behind him in third place (1:29.80) to lead the boys. Divine Kabongo took third in the 55 hurdles (9.43) with Serene Parker finishing fourth (9.66) to pace the girls effort. Other top finishers on the boys side: Bartelle was second in the long jump (19-08) and third in the high jump (5-10). Damon Abate (7th, high jump), Brendan Lyles (8th, 1000) and Cordell Jones (10th, pole vault) also took spots in the top 10. The 4×800 relay team of Hasipi, McCasland, Joseph Cervone and Jason Costa raced to victory in 8:54.74. Top finishers for the girls included Lauren Kropo (3rd, 300; 6th, 600), Lauren Sonski (5th, 1000), Lily Jason (6th, long jump; 7th, 55 meters), Lily Dalton (10th, 1600), Jaesah Perry (tied for 10th, high jump) and Leilani Marsh (tied for 10th, high jump).
