Making waves
Woodland sophomore Lauren DeGennaro looked to be in midseason form, winning two events in a season-opening 95-83 win over Jonathan Law-Milford on Sept. 8. DeGennaro won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.73) and 500 freestyle (5:32.55).

Churning up real estate
Naugatuck senior Cayden Martin ran for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds to a season-opening 21-6 win over Gilbert on Sept. 9.

Airing it out
Woodland senior Darren Gasparri let it rip, throwing for three touchdowns on 16 of 23 passing for 276 yards in a 38-6 season-opening win over Oxford on Sept. 9.

A force at the net
Naugatuck senior Jenna Ashe had seven kills and three aces to lead the Greyhounds to victory in a 3-0 sweep of Ansonia on Sept. 13.

Steering the way to a win
Woodland senior Emma Fabrizi dished out 28 assists to help the Hawks improve at 2-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over Oxford on Sept. 13.

Word from the Woods
Boys soccer – The Hawks battled Watertown to a 1-1 tie in the season opener Sept.10. Brayden Raudenbush made four saves in the net, and Alex Farr scored on an assist from Kimani Clovis.
Girls soccer – Woodland girls ran past Watertown, 5-2, in the Sept. 9 season opener. Casey Mulligan made four saves to spark the defense. Michaela Gasparri and Dani Celotto scored two goals each and Delia Kotsaftis added a goal.
Volleyball – Woodland opened the season Sept. 8 with a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-19) over Brookfield. Maille Ianniruberto had seven kills and nine aces and Emma Fabrizi dished out 28 assists. On Sept. 12 the Hawks lost, 3-1, to Amity (25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 18-25). Sam Sosnovich had 15 digs and Ava Bianchini had five kills. The Hawks improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-1 win over Oxford (20-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-14). Kalle Legassey had 13 kills and Fabrizi added 28 assists.

Naugy Notes
Boys soccer – The Greyhounds shutdown St. Paul, 4-0, to open the season Sept. 9, behind the defensive presence of goalkeeper Dan Anderson (7 saves). Jayse Danuszar led the way scoring two goals, Vinny Dos Santos pitched in with two assists, with Pedro Crivella and Luke Visciano added goals.
Girls soccer – Naugy opened the season Sept. 8, and dropped a 6-0 decision to Brookfield. The Greyhounds got back on track, picking up a hard-fought 2-0 win Sept. 10 over St. Paul. Bethany Carroll recorded her first varsity shutout, making seven saves. Lauren Sonski and Divine Kabongo scored goals with Rana Aljamal adding an assist.
Girls volleyball – Naugatuck dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2, to Pomperaug (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 8-15) on Sept. 12 in the season opener. The Greyhounds evened their mark, picking up a 3-0 sweep (25-8, 25-6, 25-12) over Ansonia on Sept. 13. Jenna Ashe led the way with seven kills and three aces. Mackenzie Skirkanich added seven assists, Riley Best had five aces, Kailin Benalcazar had four aces, Indya Waller chipped in three kills, Monica Luis had four kills and Laniah Diaz recorded three aces.
