Woodland senior Riley Kane grabbed 13 rebounds and scored a game-high 19 points, leading the Hawks to a season-opening 56-44 win over Watertown on Dec. 14.
Leading the way
Naugatuck senior Kaylee Jackson helped keep the Greyhounds close in the first half and then was a spark in a third quarter burst as she led Naugy with 13 points in a season opening 44-31 win over Torrington on Dec. 14.
Big on the boards
Woodland senior Andra Bojka helped the Hawks to a second half rally, scoring 17 points and coming away with nine rebounds in a 56-44 win over Watertown to open the season on Dec. 14.
Breaking a 20 spot
Woodland senior Rob Moriarty scored 21 points for the Hawks in the season opener Dec. 16. But the black and gold came up on the short end of an 81-56 final at Wilby.
First impressions
Woodland junior Dan Hartnett made the most of his first varsity action, dropping 18 points through the cylinder to grab some attention. But the Hawks fell short, 81-56, to Wilby Dec. 16.
Word from the Woods
Boys Basketball
The Hawks opened the regular season on the road at Wilby Thursday, Dec. 16 and came up on the short end of an 81-56 final. Rob Moriarty led the Hawks with 21 points and Dan Hartnett chipped in with 18 points. Ethan Stepputtis added eight points. The Hawks will host Oxford at on Dec. 21 and will host Wolcott on Dec. 23 before heading into the Christmas break.
Girls Basketball
The Woodland girls handed new head coach Jenn Deeley her first win as a Hawk in the season opener Tuesday, Dec. 14 with a 56-44 victory over Watertown. The Warriors battled throughout the first half that ended in a 23-23 tie. The Hawks came out pumped up after an inspiring talk by Deeley at the break as Woodland ran Watertown right out of the gym with a 25-8 third quarter. Woodland faced Wilby on Dec. 16 and improved to 2-0 following a 60-14 win. Gabby Mastropietro led the way with 16 points and Olivia Rodriguez added 12 points. The Hawks head into this week with games at Oxford on Dec. 21 and at Wolcott on Dec. 23 before a five day break for the Christmas holiday.

Boys Basketball
The Greyhounds didn’t get the season underway until (after the Citizen’s News went to press) Friday, Dec. 17 hosting WCA and then traveled to West Haven on Saturday, Dec. 18. This week the Hounds are at Derby on Tuesday, Dec. 21 and home to Watertown on Dec. 23. Naugy will be back in action after the Christmas break on Dec. 28.
Girls Basketball
The Naugy girls used a decisive 17-5 third quarter burst to turn a 22-21 halftime deficit against Torrington into a 44-31 season-opening win on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Kendall Allen, Lauryn Ramalho and Sophia DeFilippo played exceptional defense according to coach Adam Purcaro, especially in the second half when Torrington managed just 10 points. The Greyhounds were at it again on Dec. 16 at WCA and came away with a 51-20 win. Aryn Bombery led a solid group of scorers with 10 points and J.J Magalhaes had six points with seven assists. This week Naugy is home against Derby on Dec. 20 and at Watertown on Dec. 23 before taking a five-day break for Christmas.
