State champion

Woodland senior Chloe Poulos won the Class SS girls cross country race Nov. 1 in 19:54 and became the first Hawks to win a cross country state championship.

Game-changing play

Naugatuck junior Blake Stone needed to come up with a play to keep Holy Cross at bay on Oct. 29. Stone did just that with a booming 51-yard punt—the kind of play that can change the outcome of a game — in the Greyhounds’ 24-14 win.

Diving champ

Woodland junior Elle Bernegger set a Hawks record with a score of 419.20 to win the NVL diving championship on Nov. 3.

Naugatuck senior Dave Bien returned an interception 35 yards to the house Oct. 29 in the Greyhounds’ 24-14 win over Holy Cross.

Shoots and scores

Woodland senior Sara Alessio scored three goals in the Naugatuck Valley League tournament quarterfinals — a 5-0 win over Ansonia on Nov. 1 — and scored two more goals in the Hawks’ 3-0 semifinal win over St. Paul on Nov. 2.

Football

The Greyhounds improved to 5-1 with a 24-14 win over Holy Cross on Oct. 29. David Bien returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown and Dominic DeSousa kicked a 21-yard field goal. Jett Hall (10-91), Cayden Martin (12-54) and Michael Deitelbaum (15-77, 2 touchdowns) led the ground attack. Naugatuck is scheduled to play Wolcott on Nov. 5. The Greyhounds will host Woodland on Nov. 12.

Football

The Hawks improved to 5-2 with a convincing 44-7 win at Wolcott on Oct. 29. Jace Molcyk returned a 31-yard interception to the house and Michael Strachan also had an interception to pace the defense. Nate Bodnar and Jason Gruner ran in touchdowns. Darren Gasparri was 16-for-30 for 187 yards and three touchdown passes. Mason Mastropietro hauled in seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Brooks had four receptions and a touchdown. Woodland is scheduled to play Ansonia on Nov. 5. The Hawks will visit Naugatuck on Nov. 12.
