Woodland freshman Michael Belcher hit a game-tying, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth April 30 against Seymour. In the bottom of the seventh, his older brother, senior Matt Belcher, delivered a walk-off RBI single to win the game 4-3.
It’s not over till it’s over
Naugatuck junior Mia Grella came back from a 7-4 deficit in her singles match against Woodland on May 4 to win 9-7 and help the Greyhounds to their fifth victory in a row.
You’re out
Woodland’s Samantha Sosnovich pitched a gem April 30 against NVL powerhouse Seymour. The sophomore struck out 19 and allowed only two hits to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 win. Six days later, she tossed a no-hitter in a five-inning, 16-0 win over Holy Cross.
RBI machine
Naugatuck junior Nadia Cestari belted four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Greyhounds to an 18-3 win in five innings over St. Paul on April 30.
Throwing zeros
Woodland junior Tyler Giambra spun a five-hit shutout, striking out seven, to lead the Hawks to a 10-0 win over Sacred Heart on May 1.
Naugy Notes
Baseball
The Greyhounds were out-homered by St. Paul in a 10-5 loss on April 30. Jonathan Chatfield and Mike Russin had two-run homers for Naugy, and Anthony Abate and Brady Evon added RBI singles. But, the Falcons unloaded six home runs in the win. Naugy lost 10-9 to Holy Cross on May 4. Mike Deitelbaum went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Greyhounds. The Greyhounds bounced back with a 12-1 win over Kennedy on May 6 to improve to 6-2. Abate had one hit, two runs scored and two RBI. Jibree Bartelle and Lucas McKenney each had two RBI. Brayden Alves and Ryan Sutherland added two hits and two runs scored apiece. Naugatuck is scheduled to play Oxford on May 7, Woodland on May 8, Watertown on May 10, Wolcott on May 11 and Derby on May 12.
Golf
The Greyhounds picked up their first win of the season with a 223-243 victory over Seymour at Hop Brook on May 3. Ryan Hunt and Logan McKinney shot rounds of 49 to lead Naugy. Ethan Vincente shot a 62 and Vin Ferrucci finished with a 63. Naugatuck dropped to 1-6 on the season with a 170-267 loss to St. Paul on May 6 at Chippanee Country Club. McKinney led Naugauck with a 59. Vicente shot a 68 and Luke Deitelbaum had a 70. Naugy is scheduled to play Watertown on May 12 and Torrington on May 17.
Softball
The Greyhounds pounded out an 18-3 win versus St. Paul on April 30. Nadia Cestari had four hits and four RBI. Kendall Allen had three hits and three RBI. Sam Mullin added three hits and scored four runs. Felicia Salvati and Lauryn Ramalho added two hits each and scored two runs with an RBI apiece. Naugatuck improved to 6-3 with a 15-0 win over Kennedy on May 6. Aryn Bombery had three hits, three runs and two RBI. Salvati had two hits, three RBI and two runs. Allen had two hits and three RBI, and Sam Valentine chipped in two hits and two RBI. Naugy is scheduled to play Oxford on May 7, Holy Cross on May 8, Watertown on May 19 and Derby on May 12.
Track and field
The boys stayed unbeaten at 8-0 with wins over Wilby, 122-27, and St. Paul, 130-20, on May 4. The girls improved to 6-2 with wins over Wilby, 127-0, and St. Paul, 112-24. The boys were led by four double-winners: Cameron Jacobs (110 hurdles, 16.4; 300 hurdles 42.8), Matt Nofri (1600, 4:49.9; 3200, 10:51.5), Jon Volpe (400, 52.0; 800, 1:59.8) and Steven Herb (javelin 138-10; discus, 93-2). Other individual event winners included LeoAngel Lopez (200, 23.3), Jayshawn Lindsay (high jump, 5-4), Jason Spino (pole vault, 11-0) and Kevin Healy (shot put, 38-6). The boys swept the relays. The 4×800 foursome of Justin Carroll, Brendan Lyles, Chance Conklin and Zach McCasland won in 9:17.2. The 4×100 team of Radsir Vaughn, Lindsay, Taylor Trowers and Lopez won in 44.7, and the 4×400 team of Volpe, Trowers, Lindsay and Lopez took first in 3:33.4. The girls were led by two triple-winners: Allison Murphy (100 hurdles, 16.9; 300 hurdles, 48.9; 200, 27.5) and Ayana Williams (long jump, 13-7; triple jump, 25-2; shot put, 23-1). Julia Kropo was a double-winner (800, 2:30.6; javelin, 73-3. Other event winners included Lauren Sonski (400, 64.7), Rana Aljamal (1600, 6:35), Kaylee Jackson (3200, 13:44.3), Jaesah Perry (high jump, 4-2), Jayda Costa (pole vault, 6-6) and Alyssa Jones (discus, 69-4). The girls also swept the relays. The 4×800 team of Tori Lawson, Costa, Aljamal and Autumn Tansley won in 11:53.7. The 4×100 Leticia DoNascimento, Jodie St. Paul, Jessica St. Paul and Sonski won in 55.4, and the 4×400, Kropo, Sonski, St. Paul and Murphy placed first in 4:22.3. Naugy is set to face Crosby and Seymour on May 11.

Woodland remained perfect at 10-0 with wins over Seymour, 4-3, on April 30, Sacred Heart, 10-0, on May 1, Watertown, 4-1, on May 3, and Holy Cross, 4-2, on May 6. Golf
The Hawks (1-5) were idle for almost two weeks before matches set against Wolcott on May 10 and St. Paul on May 11. Woodland is set to end the regular season against Sacred Heart-Crosby on May 13 and Holy Cross on May 17.
Softball
Sam Sosnovich fired a two-hitter and struck out 19 to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 win over Seymour on April 30. Cassidy Doiron and Breanna Thurston belted home runs. On May 3, Woodland beat Watertown, 8-3. Kylie Bulinski slammed a two-run triple, and Sosnovich had a double, a home run and scored four runs. Bella Kraemer and Emily Beyer had RBI singles. The Hawks stayed perfect with a 16-0 win over Holy Cross on May 6. Sosnovich tossed a no-hitter, walking two and striking out nine to lead the Hawks (12-0). Bulinski hit a home run and two singles to drive in three runs. Beyer had a triple and three RBI. Woodland is scheduled to take on Thomaston on May 8, St. Paul on May 10 and Ansonia on May 12.
Track and field
The boys and girls teams swept a tri-meet against Torrington and Kennedy on May 6. The girls beat Kennedy, 129-16, and Torrington, 119-26, to stay perfect at 7-0. The boys beat Torrington, 118-31, and Kennedy, 117-32, to improve to 6-1. Woodland is scheduled to face Derby and St. Paul on May 11.
