Hat trick

Naugatuck junior Tommy Martins scored a hat trick to lead the Hounds to a 4-0 win over Seymour last week.

Answering the call

Naugatuck junior Doreon Chapman took over at running back last Friday against Seymour and ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Greyhounds to a 31-12 win.

Leader at the net

Woodland junior Steph Krebbs stepped up last Friday in the Hawks’ first win of the season, a 3-2 victory against Oxford. Krebbs had 14 kills, 10 digs and three blocks for the Hawks.

Double trouble

Naugatuck sophomore Molly Kennelly won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke in the Greyhounds’ season-opening 93-72 win over Torrington last Friday. Kennelly also was on the 200 medley relay team that took first.

A good first impression

In her first varsity swim meet, Naugatuck freshman Katelyn Fortney won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly as well as swimming on the first place 200 freestyle relay last Friday at Torrington.

Naugy Notes

Cross Country

The Naugatuck boys and girls cross country teams both improved to 3-2 on the year by sweeping a meet Tuesday against Crosby and Holy Cross. Abigail Lombardi won the girls race in 23:12. Briana Lenon, Lauren Rupsis, Jade Lima, Gina Conforti and Britany Soubannarath placed in the top ten for Naugy. On the boys’ side, Ross Via (18:05) and Elliot Via (18:11) finished first and second, respectively. Charlie Marenghi added a top-ten finish for Naugatuck. Naugatuck will face Oxford, Sacred Heart and Wilby on Sept. 26 in Waterbury.

Volleyball

The Greyhounds fell to Torrington, 3-0, last Thursday and to Wolcott, 3-2, last Friday. Naugatuck improved to 3-3 on the season with a 3-2 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday. Taylor Hunt had 14 service points against Torrington and Brielle Behuniak had seven service points and four aces. Behuniak led the way with 10 assists and five aces against Wolcott. Aryana Powell had 20 service points, five aces and three kills vs. Holy Cross. Cailee Bergin added 14 kills and seven assists. Naugy will finish out the week on Friday by hosting Watertown.

Word from the Woods

Cross Country

The Woodland boys and girls cross country teams remained perfect at 6-0 after sweeping a meet Tuesday against Wilby, St. Paul and Waterbury Career. Emma Slavin won the girls’ race in 22:09. The Woodland girls put seven runners in the top ten total, including Jaden Young, Brooke Iannone, Emilie Noreika, Jill Brotherton, Jessica Fox and Calisa Costanzo. Matt Luxeder won the boys’ race in 17:42. Five other Hawks finished in the top ten: Martin Swercewski, Vin Costanzo, Wes Stein, Tom Bucciferro and Charlie Schwartz. Woodland will face Crosby, Torrington and Wolcott in Torrington Sept. 26.

Volleyball

The Hawks won back-to-back games after starting the season 0-3. Woodland (2-3) broke into the win column with a 3-2 victory over Oxford last Friday. Steph Krebbs led the way with 14 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Fatima Khalid guided the offense with 25 assists and lent a hand defensively with 16 digs and two kills. Lexie Chabot added eight digs, four kills and three assists. The Hawks swept Watertown, 3-0, on Tuesday. Krebbs had 11 kills, 10 aces and nine digs. Alyssa Lukeski had four kills, four aces and three digs. Woodland will finish out the week at Wolcott on Friday.
