Mo’s Moments of the Week

Aces are wild

In the Greyhounds’ 3-2 win over Ansonia Sept. 24 senior outside hitter Kathryn Healy was on the mark serving up 16 points and 12 aces.

In Woodland’s 3-0 sweep of Watertown Sept. 24 senior hitter Sam White was on target serving up 10 aces.

Saving the day

Woodland’s girls soccer captain and junior Jenna Pannone has been leading the Woodland. She recorded her second shutout of the season in a 9-0 win over Sacred Heart Sept. 23.

Naugatuck Senior captain Sophie Boucher has helped Naugatuck to five straight wins and turned in back-to-back shutouts before making 13 saves in 2-1 overtime win Sept. 25 against St. Paul.

Blazing the trail  

Naugatuck senior captain Mark Zamani posted the fastest time (17:11) of the season leading the unbeaten Greyhounds (8-0) to a cross country victory in Derby on Tuesday.

Cross Country

The Naugatuck boys remained unbeaten at 8-0 with wins over Derby (18-44), Wolcott (18-44) and St. Paul (15-44) Tuesday in Derby. Mark Zamani led the ‘Hounds with a season-best time of 17:11 to take first place. Graden Beasley was second at 18:02. Ross Via finished fourth, Brandon Thomas fifth, David Kearns eighth and Luis Garces ninth. The Naugatuck girls (5-3) dropped a tough 17-41 loss to Derby, but earned wins over St. Paul (23-33) and Wolcott (18-35). Courtney Morin finished fifth to lead the Greyhounds with Lauren Stankiewicz finishing eighth and Cindy Stirk ninth. The Greyhounds will head to Torrington Oct. 6 to take on Watertown, Torrington and Waterbury Career.

Girls Swimming

Naugatuck (2-2) fell to Oxford, 102-71, and topped St. Paul, 71-68, Tuesday in a tri-meet. Addison Best swam to victory in the 500 freestyle in 6:04.35. Amanda Rinaldi won the breast stroke in 1:28.85. Naugatuck faced Woodland Wednesday. The Greyhounds will hit the road to face Seymour Friday and Sacred Heart Oct. 6.

Word from the Woods

Cross Country

The Woodland boys remained unbeaten defeating Watertown, 24-32, and Oxford, 17-45, Tuesday at Veterans Park in Watertown. Brian Sardinskas ran to a first in 17:43. Kyle Crowell took third in 18:33 and Matt Luxeder finished fifth in 18:42. The Hawks rounded out the top 10 with Paul Jones finishing seventh and Matt Giaquinto taking tenth. The girls suffered their first loss of the season by a slim 26-29 margin to Watertown, but improved to 7-1 with a 15-50 win over Oxford. Marina Bojka led the Hawks with a third place finish at 21:27. Kelsey Mitchell finished fourth, Clara Drozdowski was eighth and Kailyn Accetura finished tenth. The Hawks will be on the road Oct. 6 to take on Holy Cross, Sacred Heart and Derby.

Girls Swimming

The Woodland girls fell to 2-2 on the season coming up on the short end of a 100-80 final to a tough Watertown (5-0) team Sept. 25. Tatianna Lynn won the 200 freestyle in 2:16.23 and Morgan Reichard won the 100 breast stroke in 1:30.52. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Lynn, Brooke Pope, Veronica Dergachev and Sarah Bryden swam to victory in 4:27.20. The Hawks took on Naugatuck Wednesday. Woodland will host Suffield Friday before hitting the road Oct. 5 to face Wilby.
