Making a racket

Woodland senior Mike Roulanaitis, the Hawks’ top tennis player, started the season undefeated at 2-0 despite of the team’s 0-2 record. Those wins have come by wide margins of 8-0 and 8-1.

Walk-off win

Naugatuck senior co-captain Jenna Massicotte hit a walk-off single to drive in the winning run in the Greyhounds’ 7-6 win over Wolcott on Monday. Naugatuck has scored nine runs through two games and Massicotte has driven in four of those runs.

Productive bat

Woodland senior Gina Farina swung a potent bat in the Hawks’ 25-7 win over Kennedy last Friday. She had four hits, scored three runs and drove in two runs to lead the Woodland attack at the plate.

A medalist-worthy round

Woodland senior Ryan Warner led the Hawks to a 176-286 win over Crosby on Tuesday at Oxford Greens. He led all scorers shooting a medalist round of 39.

King of the hill

Naugatuck junior Jovanni Torres has taken the mound twice this season for the Greyhounds (1-2) and has been lights out. In a 7-2 win over Ansonia April 6, he threw five innings, gave up two hits and struck out five. On Monday, in a 1-0 eight-inning loss to Wolcott, he went allowed no hits and struck out three in five innings.

Golf

The Greyhounds came up short in the season-opener on Tuesday, 194-210, to Sacred Heart. Jake Alcorace led the way shooting a team-best 48. Kody Butler (53), Colin Sheedy (55) and Rita Rajkumar (54) rounded out the scoring for Naugatuck. Naugatuck was scheduled to play Holy Cross Thursday. The Greyhounds will host O’Brien Tech next Monday before facing Watertown and Wilby next Tuesday.

Track and field

The boys and girls swept a quad–meet on Tuesday versus Torrington, Wilby and Waterbury Career. The boys defeated Torrington, 104-45, Wilby, 127-20 and Waterbury Career, 102-35. The girls defeated Torrington, 99-50, Wilby, 132-13 and Waterbury Career, 134-11. Mark Zamani led the way for the boys winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 as Naugy finished first in 11 of 18 events. Other event winners included Aren Seeger (400), Matt Wahl (300 hurdles), Grady Beasley (pole vault), Logan Bond (shot put) and Kyle Anders-Huculak (discus.) The girls had two triple winners and a double winner as they captured first place in 15 of 18 events. Jasmine Grey won the 100 hurdles, long jump and high jump, and Ariana Alvarado won the 100, 200 and 400. Lauren Stankiewicz won the 1600 and 3200. Individual winners included Erin Schofield (javelin), Rachel Garcia (triple jump) and Liz Trumbley (pole vault). Naugatuck will face Seymour, Wolcott and Crosby April 19.

Word from the Woods

Woodland got the season under way Tuesday with a convincing 176-286 victory over Crosby. Ryan Warner was the medalist shooting a 39. Zach Crowell (45), Julian Perino (42) and Alec Feducia (50) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks. Woodland was scheduled to face Kennedy Thursday. They have next week off.

Track and field

The boys and girls swept a quad–meet on Tuesday versus St. Paul, Sacred Heart and Crosby. The boys won 15 of the 18 events on the way to defeating St. Paul, 142-8, Sacred Heart, 129-21, and Crosby, 125-25. The girls also won 15 of the 18 events as they topped St. Paul, 140-6, Sacred Heart, 125-20, and Crosby, 129-17. Brandon Clifford won the 110 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Jeff Giusto (800 and 1600) and Sean McAllen (javelin and the shot put) were double winners. Individual winners included Brian Sardinskas (3200), Colton Cronin (400), Tom Smith (high jump), Craig Starkey (pole vault) and Matt Hopkinson (discus). The girls were led by three double winners: Kelsey Mitchell (1600 and 3200), Lisa Thrasher (400 and high jump) and Lauren Lombardo (long jump and triple jump). Individual winners include Jordan Williams (100 hurdles), Ava Capuano (300 hurdles), Clara Drozdowski (800), Sam Plasky (pole vault), Steph McLean (discus) and Kristen Persico (javelin). Woodland will face Derby, Oxford and Torrington April 19.
