Boys Soccer

Naugatuck sits atop the standings tied with Seymour for the No. 1 seed in the Naugatuck Valley League tournament with a week to go in the season. On Oct. 8 the Greyhounds (11-0-2) faced Torrington in a rematch that was a scheduled out-of-conference game although they are both NVL teams. The NVL rivals played to a 1-1 draw. Martins scored in the overtime to give Naugy the lead, but Torrington tied the game in the second overtime. On Oct. 10, the Greyhounds rallied to beat Holy Cross 2-1 by scoring two goals in 64 seconds with under 10 minutes to go in regulation. Dan Martins and Dan Silva scored for Naugy as Fez Pereira and Rabbi Ahmed combined for three saves. Naugy ran through Wilby Monday for a 5-0 win. C.J. Carrello scored two goals and Ygor Silva added one goal and an assist. Diogo Cruz and Michael Nanadoum also pitched in goals. Ahmed made three saves. Naugatuck will visit Wolcott Friday and Ansonia on Monday. The Greyhounds will return home Oct. 22 to host Sacred Heart.

Cross Country

The boys won the NVL championship meet Wednesday in Watertown while the girls came in fifth place. Look for a story on the meet in next week’s edition.

Girls Swimming

Naugatuck faced St. Paul on Oct. 10. The results weren’t reported. The Greyhounds will hit the road Friday to face Torrington and Oct. 22 to swim against Masuk.

Boys Soccer

The Hawks have won three of their last five games as they look to make a push for one of the two last spots in the Naugatuck Valley League tournament. The Hawks (5-8) fell to Crosby 3-1 Oct. 10. Thomas Bethin scored, with an assist from Brian Guerrera, and Brandon Ocetnik made five saves for Woodland. On Tuesday Woodland beat Ansonia 4-2 in overtime. Sam Merriman scored twice and added an assist. Matt Spofford and James Yacavone chipped in goals, as Bethin and Steve Kazalunas added assists. Ocetnik made 12 saves. The Hawks will host Kennedy on Friday and their senior night is Monday at 6 p.m. against Derby. Woodland closes out the regular season Oct. 22 at Seymour.

Cross Country

Football

Woodland was one a bye last week. The Hawks (2-2) host Weston Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Girls Swimming

The Hawks (6-5) swam past Suffield Oct. 8 93-87. Event winners included Sarah Bryden (50 free and 100 back), Sara Fowler (Diving), the 200 free relay team (Lisa Thrasher, Brooke Pope, Tatianna Lynn and Emma Sardinskas) and the 400 free relay squad (Lynn, Taylor Amore, Veronica Dergachev, Bryden). On Oct. 10, the Hawks fell to Sacred Heart 94-83. Event winners included Fowler (Diving) Morgan Reichard (100 breast) and the 400 free relay team Woodland (Sardinskas, Amore, Dergachev, Brooke Pope). Woodland beat St. Paul 84-68 Oct. 15. Event winners included the 200 medley relay team (Bryden, Thrasher, Sardinskas and Lynn) and Sara Fowler (Diving). The Hawks will visit Masuk on Friday and return home to host Kennedy Monday.
