Good weather and the Naugatuck Valley League postseason just don’t go together very well.

The tournament openers were postponed from their originally scheduled starts last Saturday due to rain in the final week of the regular season. Of course, the new schedule couldn’t go on without some trouble.

Rain on Monday allowed for only sporadic play in the baseball and softball tournament quarterfinals, including a suspension in the Woodland-Ansonia softball game and the postponement of the Naugatuck-Watertown softball game. The girls tennis team tournament, in which Naugatuck is set to face Watertown in the semifinals, was also postponed.

Tuesday was a total washout for everything but the track and field championships. That leaves a host of doubleheaders for Wednesday.

The baseball and softball tournament quarterfinals and semifinals are all scheduled to be completed by the end of the day Wednesday, with the championships being played Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the girls tennis team tournament is set to resume and end Wednesday afternoon at Woodland. The individual singles and doubles tournaments were moved to a Friday start at Woodland with the championship rounds to be played Saturday.

The boys tennis individual tournaments were not affected, as early rounds were scheduled to begin Thursday at Woodland with the championship rounds to be played Friday at Wolcott.

The NVL golf championships also went unscathed, as they won’t get underway until May 31 at the Watertown Country Club.

The NVL is rushing to finish all its tournaments as soon as possible to allow teams rest and preparation for state tournament play, which opens for most area teams on Tuesday.

Both local softball teams, as well as all four tennis teams and Naugatuck baseball will be competing in the state tournaments. Pairings will be released for most tournaments on Friday.
