Naugy, Woodland advance to NVL volleyball semis

Naugatuck and Woodland advanced to the Naugatuck Valley League volleyball tournament semifinals on Nov. 1, when the Greyhounds and Hawks will meet to determine who will play for a championship.

Naugatuck swept Watertown, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-15), Oct. 30 in the quarterfinals. Kendall Allen had 19 kills, and Nadia Cestari had 28 assists and 16 service points to lead the Greyhounds. Kaylee Jackson had 10 kills and 12 service points, and Samantha Mullin added two kills, two aces and two assists.

Woodland defeated No. 6 Torrington, 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-5), in the quarterfinals. Maille Ianniruberto had 11 kills and six blocks while Kalle Legassey had 10 kills and 20 digs. Amber Rosato had 21 digs.

Naugatuck will play Woodland at 5:30 p.m. at Kennedy High School in Waterbury in the first semifinal. The winner will play for a championship Nov. 3 at Kennedy against the winner of the second semifinal match between Seymour and Kennedy.

The NVL soccer boys and girls quarterfinals were postponed from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

In the girls’ tournament, Woodland will face Ansonia at 2 p.m. in Derby. Naugatuck will head to Bristol to play St. Paul at 2:30 p.m. The semifinals are Nov. 2 and the final is Nov. 4 at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.

On the boys’ side, Woodland will host Torrington at 3 p.m. to start the tournament while Naugatuck will host Oxford at 6:15 p.m. The semifinals are Nov. 2 at Torrington High and the final is Nov. 4 at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.
