The State Open swim meet brought together the top 24 performers in each event from the four state divisions combined on Saturday to Kiphuth Pool on the campus of Yale University in New Haven to decide who the best of the best are in the state.

Naugatuck finished 29th overall out of the 50 teams represented, scoring a team total of 39 points. Senior Evan Bombery competed in the 200 freestyle and was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team with seniors Eric Cruz and P.J. Morrissey and junior Brian Goggin.

Bombery swam to a 16th-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.43 to score 11 team points. The 200 freestyle relay squad scored 28 team points with a 13th-place finish in 1:31.19.

“We had a good season,” said Naugatuck head coach Jim McKee following the team’s second-place finish at the NVL championship on March 3. “We doubled the scores of Sacred Heart and Torrington and were the only team to give Holy Cross a run for it. We gave ourselves the opportunity and from a coach’s standpoint that’s all you can ask for, an opportunity.”
