Girls’ Soccer

Yes, the Naugatuck girls’ soccer squad is still undefeated, but the Hounds were tested in each of their three matches this week—a 4-2 win over Torrington last Thursday, a 2-0 shutout of Woodland Friday, and a 2-1 overtime victory in a rematch with the Red Raiders. In the first matchup with then-undefeated Torrington, the score remained tight throughout, as the Raiders either led or stayed within one goal for 73 minutes. But goals by Sara Tarsi, Stephanie Santos, Katherine Bottnick, and Nicole Sambrook allowed the Hounds to pull away and grab the edge in the NVL Copper Division. The next day, the Hounds found themselves tied with Woodland at the half before receiving goals by Martyann Chromik and Sarah Magnamo to emerge victorious. Jessica Johnson made seven saves to preserve the shutout. In what might have been the Copper clincher Tuesday in Torrington, the Garnet and Grey were pushed to the brink, but again it was Santos to the rescue, accounting for both goals, including the game-winner in overtime. With the win, the Hounds clinched the Copper Division crown currently sport a 9-0 record. They have four more pitches this week, including three home games—Seymour on Thursday, Woodland on Monday, and Sacred Heart Wednesday—and a non-league trip to Pomperaug Saturday afternoon.

Volleyball

The Hounds spikers posted their first perfect week since mid-September with wins over Wilby on Wednesday and Watertown on Thursday. Naugatuck crushed the Wildcats, sweeping with scores of 25-3, 25-14, and 25-9. The Garnet and Grey were led by Alexis Granahan (19 points, seven aces, four kills), Daniella Stoehrer (16 points, six aces, five digs), and Catie Garrett (12 points, four kills). The Greyhounds didn’t have such an easy time with the Indians, although they did pull out a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14) victory. Leaders for Naugy included Garrett (23 points, 10 kills, six aces), Granahan (eight points, four aces), Skye Stella (13 points, 16 digs, four aces), Renee Augustine (13 points, three aces), and Lindsay Witkoski (31 assists, nine points). With an 8-3 record, Naugatuck sits in fourth place in the NVL’s overall standings, second in the Copper behind Kennedy. The Hounds have a busy week ahead, with matches at St. Paul Wednesday, against Crosby Friday, at Holy Cross Monday, and against Ansonia next Wednesday.
