Boys’ Soccer

The Hounds maintained their unblemished record in their only pitch this week, a 3-1 win over Holy Cross at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury. After a scoreless first half, it was none other than junior superstar Tiago Martins to lead the way for Naugy, scoring his squad’s first goal of the match. Later, Marcos Santos and Hein Tran found the net to expand the Garnet and Grey’s lead. Ralph Roper also added an assist for Naugatuck. Dan Bronko and Donato Piriscafo combined to stop four shots for the Hounds. At 9-0-1 on the year, Naugy remains in the driver’s seat in the Naugatuck Valley League Copper Division but is still even with Watertown (10-0-1) in the overall league standings. Though the Hounds and Indians do not face each other again in the regular season, Naugatuck can clinch the Copper with a win at Torrington on Thursday night. The Greyhounds then finish with four matches in the next week—an out-of-league contest at Pomperaug Saturday before league pitches against Seymour Monday, Ansonia Tuesday, and Derby next Thursday.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Naugatuck swimmers moved back into the win column Friday night with an 89-74 win over St. Paul in the borough. The Hounds dominated the meet, winning all but three events on the night. Leah Grabowski, Sarah Konops, Molly Walsh, and Taylor Filanowski teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in two minutes, 10.37 seconds to begin the meet. Grabowski, Konops, and Walsh all went on to win races on their own—Grabowski won both the 100 fly (1:13.87) and the 100 back (1:16.12), while Konops captured the 200 IM (2:35.64), and Walsh finished first in the 50 free (28.33). Nicole Javins won the 100 free in 1:01.63 and Melissa Uva led the divers with a score of 157.65. The Greyhounds also won the 200 free relay, as the team of Filanowski, Walsh, Javins, and Samantha Fredericks finished in a time of 1:56.81. Naugatuck has two meets remaining on its schedule, hosting both Torrington this Friday and Holy Cross Oct. 30. The Hounds will then send individuals to the NVL trials Nov. 4 and the NVL diving championship Nov. 5.
