The Greyhounds kicked off their quest to reclaim the Naugatuck Valley League title Tuesday by shutting out Crosby, 4-0. Junior Tiago Martins pulled off a hat trick. Hein Tran added a goal to lead Naugy over the Bulldogs at Municipal Stadium. Junior Richard Mitchell and senior Manny Nobre each had assists for Naugy, while junior Dan Bronko needed to make only one save. The Hounds begin a three-game homestand Friday night, as they take on Wolcott at 6 p.m., followed by night matches Tuesday and Wednesday against Sacred Heart and Holy Cross, respectively.

Woodland boys’ soccer

The Black and Gold started its season on the wrong foot Tuesday, suffering a 5-2 defeat to Ansonia. The combination of juniors Christian Pinho and Tyler Carlos accounted for both of Woodland’s goals, but the Chargers dumped in all five of their goals during the second half to seal their win in Ansonia. Senior keeper Damien Giordano kept six balls from finding the net in the losing effort. The Hawks will stay on the road for their next two contests, taking on Sacred Heart Friday in Waterbury and traveling to Derby for their first taste of the Red Raiders Monday. Woodland opens its home slate Sept. 25 against Wilby.

The Woodland spikers were one of two Hawks squads to register wins on their first day of action Tuesday, mowing down Ansonia, 3-0. The season-opening win figures to be the first of many this year for the Hawks, who are the favorites to win not only the NVL Brass Division championship, but the league crown as well, behind key players such as seniors Emily Hutvagner, Erika Barnett and Stephanie Badale, as well as junior Jess Patrizi. The Black and Gold traveled for the first time to St. Paul Catholic Thursday night and heads to Naugatuck Monday before its home opener against Holy Cross Wednesday.
