NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck wrestler Logan Wilcox is coming on in his second season as a team of one competing with Pomperaug.

The sophomore improved to 6-2 on the season with a second-period pin in a match against New Milford Jan. 16, and he’s looking to finish out the season strong and advance to the state open.

“The goal for this season is to place in the Class L tournament and to qualify for the state open,” Wilcox said. “I don’t typically pay attention to rankings in the Class L, but at 6-2 I’m on the right track.

“Two of my wins came by forfeit, but still I’m 4-2 in competition. My coach, Brendan Quinn of Pomperaug, tells me he’s happy with my effort. He just wants me to work on my mat awareness.”

Wilcox started the season by taking second in the 170-pound class at the O’Keefe-Pomperaug Invitational. Wilcox earned a pin over his Holy Cross opponent and then scored a major decision over a competitor from Farmington to reach the championship final. He took on his practice partner, sophomore Ben Bova of Pomperaug, in the final and lost in a minor decision.

“Ben and I really push one another in practice,” Wilcox said. “I can’t really point out any one phase that I’m excelling at. It’s just knowing more of the routines and technical skills needed to be successful. It all comes down to seeing what your opponent is giving you. I try to take advantage and capitalize on their mistakes the best I can.”

Wilcox will compete again when Pomperaug faces off against Masuk on Wednesday. Pomperaug will be home on Jan. 30 for a match with Bethel and close out the regular season on Feb. 4 at Notre Dame of Fairfield.
