The Naugatuck and Woodland golf teams were preparing to take on the best of the best in the June 1 NVL championship to be held at the Watertown Country Club.

St. Paul, Holy Cross and Watertown have always been the teams to beat, but this year there is a new kid on the block with the undefeated Waterbury co-op (16-0) added to the fray.

Woodland built a reputation of being a competitive force ,but over the past few years inexperience has found its way into a lineup that only boasted one senior over the last three seasons.

“We are definitely in a rebuilding year,” said Woodland coach Bill Carangelo. “We didn’t qualify enough players for a full team. During the regular season we went with a four-player rotation but for the championship we will only bring just two players.”

Representing the Hawks will be their only senior, Aden Ianniruberto, and sophomore Elias Carmack. Both players have led the team as low scorers this season and will be challenged in a very competitive field.

Naugatuck (6-7) will be looking to improve on last year’s surprising fourth place finish. It may be a lot more challenging this time around with the Waterbury co-op team added to the mix. The top four of Naugy will be seniors Vinny Ferrucci and Dan Testone, along with sophomore Nate Testone and freshman Gino Ferrucci.
