As the saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t play. A lot of spring sports teams are singing that tune lately. The Naugatuck golf team is picking up some momentum having played three matches in three days last week.
“It’s going to get a whole lot busier as we have four more matches lined up for this week,” said Naugatuck head coach Pete Kovalski. “I’m not of the theory that practice makes perfect because in the game of golf nothing is ever perfect.
“But I think with some consistent weather we can build some consistency in our play and see some improvement. We had three tough matches against three very good teams but we saw improvement each time out and that’s what you are looking for.”
Naugy took on Woodland on April 22 and came up short, 190-221. Nate Testone led the team with a 52 and Gino Ferrucci was right behind with a 53. Anthony Montini came in with a 57 and Liz Nixon finished up with a 59.
“We are trying to limit the damage and take a few strokes off the scores of our top three players Nate, Gino and Anthony,” said Kovalski, “but that is going to come the more times they are out there working on their game.”
The Greyhounds traveled to Crestbrook Park in Watertown on April 23 and lost, 191-228. Ferrucci had the top score with a 48, Montini was at 55 and Testone checked in with a 59. Jett Hall finished up the foursome shooting a 66.
Naugy was back home at Hop Brook on April 24 taking on the NVL’s top team Holy Cross and lost, 172-212. On a positive note, that was the best score of the season for the 0-5 Greyhounds.
Montini had a team best score of 50, Ferrucci settled in at 53 with Nixon knocking down a 54 and Testone finished with a 55.
“I think the kids are making positive progress,” said Kovalski. “A lot of the kids are staying after practice working on their game. It’s difficult in a quick season to improve your game to a point where you are efficient, but in terms of work ethic and positive attitude, I can’t ask for anything more.”
