Locals bow out of district tourney

Robert A. Cole Little League’s run in the district tournament has come to an end.

Cole was eliminated Tuesday after winning three games and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Major Boys Division double-elimination tournament.

Zach Laput and Stephen Persico homered for Cole in a 5-2 loss to Shelton-American on Tuesday night in Prospect.

Dante DiRubba, Danny Amarosa and Laput combined to strike out 11 over six innings on the mound.

Last Sunday, Cole defeated Derby, 14-4, to stay alive. DiRubba had three hits and a homer, while Alex Kalentek, Kyle Bshara and Laput (home run) each had two hits.

DiRubba and Bshara combined for nine strikeouts over the four-inning, shortened game.

After starting out the tournament with two wins, Cole dropped a heartbreaker to Shelton-National last Saturday.

DiRubba smacked a three-run homer in the first to give Cole an early lead. Carter Amore added a two-run shot in the fourth to make it 5-1.

Laput added three hits. National scored the next five runs and kept Cole off the scoreboard in the final frame.

In other District 3 tournament games, Prospect Little League eliminated Union City, 6-4, last Saturday in Naugatuck.

Union City led 3-1 after four before Prospect came back.

Adam Farrerra homered, while Mark Nofri and Derrick Jagello both had hits and a run scored. George Cruz, Alvin Torres and Jay Mezzo also added hits for Union City.

Cruz went the first five innings for Union City and struck out two.

For Prospect, Nick DeLucia had two hits and scored a run. Jason Claiborn walked, doubled and scored a run, while John DeTulo walked, was hit by a pitch and singled.
DeTulo also pitched four innings, gave up three runs and struck out three for Prospect.

In other local action, Peter J. Foley was eliminated by Derby, 4-0, last Saturday.
The tournament is down to three teams. Shelton-American and Shelton-National are set to face off in an elimination game Thursday in Ansonia to advance to play Seymour.

The winner of the Shelton-Shelton game must defeat Seymour twice. The title game is set for Saturday at the Nike Site in Shelton. If needed, the two teams will square off in the final game on Sunday at the same location.
