Little League’s premier division — 11- and 12-year-old baseball — begins tournament play in District 3 this weekend.
Peter J. Foley kicks off play Friday against Shelton National at Nolan Field at 6 p.m. The other three local teams start play on Sunday.
In Shelton, Prospect faces Shelton American while Union City squares off with Seymour. In Beacon Falls, Robert A. Cole hosts Derby. All three games are at 3:15 p.m.
PJF could play its second tournament game either Sunday against Ansonia or Tuesday against an opponent to be determined, depending on its result Friday.
The 11-12 tournament championship will be decided either July 13 or July 15.
Each Little League’s younger baseball all-star squad will also compete in a district tournament. In the 9- and 10-year-old division, tourney play begins Thursday. RACBL hosts Shelton National, PJF hosts Shelton American, and Prospect visits Derby. That tournament championship will be determined either July 6 or July 8.
In the 10- and 11-year-old division, Union City is one of four teams entered. Its first game will be July 7 at Seymour. The tournament championship will be decided either July 13 or July 15.
Union City’s softball teams are also entered in District 3 play. The 11-12 all-stars were set to play an elimination game against Shelton on Wednesday. A victory in that game would send the girls to championship weekend on Friday against Seymour.
Union City’s 9-10 all-stars earned a first-round bye and will host either Seymour or Oxford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
