Hop Brook tournament heading down homestretch

NAUGATUCK — The Hop Brook Men’s Golf Championship tournament is going down to the wire as the field of 45 golfers has been whittled down.

The semifinals are Saturday and the championship will be decided Sunday at Hop Brook Golf Course.

Mike Erickson defeated Nate Deller and Glenn Petelle defeated Pat Corbett in a couple of late first-round matches. Erickson will play Craig Behun on Wednesday in the final quarterfinal match of the Championship Flight. The winner of the match will take on Chris Sokolowski Saturday in the semifinals. Sokolowski defeated Tom Kaminski, 3-2, to earn a spot in the semifinals.

The other semifinal match in the Championship Flight will be Rich Brenia, a 3-2 winner over Petelle, going up against Todd Gronau, a 4-3 winner over Pat Granahan.

The semifinals in the First Flight will feature Manny Tribanas, a 3-2 winner over Gary Stabile, going up against Cory Leonard, a 5-3 winner over Sam Molnar. In the other semifinal, George Lockwood, a 5-4 winner over Tom Gronau, will play Mike Fox, a 5-4 winner over Steve Kloc.

John Cerreta, a 2-1 winner over Ron Wallace, will take on Steven Slekis, a 2-1 winner over Steve Nester, in a semifinal match in the Second Flight. The other semifinal match will have Larry Testone, a 5-3 winner over Jim Russo, taking on Bill Brown, a 4-3 winner over Steve Rager.
