NEW HAVEN — The Woodland Hawks qualified for the finals in three relay events at the Class S state swimming championships Nov. 11 at Southern Connecticut State University.

The Hawks, who finished seventh at the Naugatuck Valley League meet earlier this month, finished with 70 points and placed 20th out of 31 schools at states. Weston High School won the meet with 669.5 points, while fellow NVL member Sacred Heart was third overall with 392 points.

In the 200 medley relay, Sarah Bryden, Lisa Thrasher, Emma Sardinskas and Sara Fowler combined to finish 15th overall for Woodland. The team finished at 2:12.29, about a second and a half behind a team from St. Joseph’s.

Thrasher and Fowler teamed with Tatiana Lynn and Brooke Pope in the 200 free relay to place 15th overall. The team’s time of 1:56.08 was over 3 seconds better than its prelim time of 1:59.65.

In the 400 yard free relay, the team of Bryden, Sardinskas, Thrasher and Lynn cut over 6 seconds off their prelim time. They produced a time of 4:19.35 and finished 16th overall to give the Hawks 22 points.

The Hawks had several other competitors who qualified for state competition in individual events.

Lynn and Veronica Dergachev qualified for the 200 free, while Bryden represented the Hawks in the 50 free and 100 back.

Sardinskas swam in the 500 free and 100 back, while freshmen Pope (200 IM) and Kyla Drewry (butterfly) made their debut at the state level.
