BEACON FALLS — The Woodland boys finished what they started and completed an undefeated journey through the season by capturing the Naugatuck Valley League championship meet on Tuesday in Beacon Falls.
The Woodland girls made it a clean sweep, edging league champion Watertown to win the meet.
The boys racked up 152 points, well ahead of Derby (79), Wolcott (78), and Naugatuck (68). The girls were in a tight race that had four teams in contention. Woodland held on for a slim 134-132 win over Watertown, with Holy Cross (97) and Wolcott (90) close behind.
“We knew we were coming in here with a target on our backs,” Woodland boys coach Tim Shea said. “That’s fine with us. It only makes us concentrate a little better at what we need to do. We certainly can’t control what other teams do. The only thing we have control over is what we do.”
Tim Madormo and Mike Lang each won gold twice to help Woodland pile on the lead. Madormo won the 110-meter hurdles for the second year in a row with a time of 15.9 seconds before capturing the 300 hurdles in 40.16 seconds.
Lang took gold in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet while also winning the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 8.25 inches.
Older brother Scott Lang won his second straight league javelin championship with a heave of 168-1, while Levi Fancher took second in the shot put with a distance of 42-10.
Woodland also won two of three relays. The 4-by-100 team of Mike Lang, Jon Alarcon, Ryan Greenwood, and Scott Seigle took first in a time of 45.41 seconds, while the 4-by-400 squad of Nick LaPerriere, Marc Beaulieu, Madormo and Eric Dietz won in 3:25.65.
The Hawks swept the medals in the 400. LaPerriere won in 50.24 seconds, with Dietz (50.75) and Alarcon (51.55) right behind him. LaPerriere also took second in the 200 with a time of 23.39 seconds.
The girls, under coach Jeff Lownds, used a total team effort to get by a very tough Watertown team. High finishes in all three relays were crucial to the meet victory.
The 4-by-100 team of Jiye Park, Steph Dumond, Ashley Michie and Jazmyn Menzies finished second in 52.09 seconds, while the 4-by-400 squad of Dumond, Menzies, Sydney Corneau and Tayler Boncal took second with a time of 4:17.78.
The 4-by-800 foursome of Mary Sardinskas, Audra Blewitt, Erika Tyrrell and Corneau finished third with an effort of 10.26.25.
Boncal won gold in the 400 for the second year in a row, breaking the one-minute mark with a time of 59.97 seconds.
“I thought I might have went out too fast,” Boncal said. “But I focused on getting her at the end. I was a little nervous coming into this race. I won it last year but the competition is really strong this year. But I had enough left at the end to pull it out.”
A pair of jumpers also won gold. Ashley Riley took the long jump with a distance of 16-1 while Park won the triple jump with an effort of 34-4.
Woodland will have little time to relish the spoils of victory as it prepares for the Class M championships on Tuesday.
