BEACON FALLS — The Hawks put up some notable results at a stacked Class M track and field competition last week.

Historically, the Class M field produces some of the best teams in the state. The Woodland boys and girls teams both finished 21st at the meet.

On the girls side, Tolland won both the Class M and state open meets this year, while Hillhouse took second at the M and fifth at the open.

After the Woodland girls completed an NVL title three-peat, Abby Rosato earned a medal with a third-place finish in the discus at the Class M meet. Her throw of 99-10 in the discus qualified her for the state open, where she finished 18th overall on Monday.

“Abby really capped off a great year for herself,” Woodland coach Jeff Lownds said. “When you get to the state open, you’re in the top 5 percent in the state.”

Other individual top-10 finishes for the girls at the Class M meet included Kelsey Mitchell (3200, 10th) and Jazmyn Menzies (Long Jump, eighth).

On the boys’ side, Brandon Clifford finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 41-04.25. Clifford took 19th at the state open.

In addition, the 4×400 relay team of Tom Bethin, Jeff Moffat, Dean Conway and junior James Yacavone, who won the NVL competition, took fifth at the Class M and advanced to the state open. They finished 22nd overall at the open.

Pat Hale took ninth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.22.

“It’s a long season,” Lownds said. “And we’re very proud of what both teams accomplished. We had very high expectations, they bought in, and worked and did their best every day, and you can’t ask for anything more than that.”
