BEACON FALLS — The Woodland baseball team entered the season having to replace a ton of experience. The Hawks returned just two starters and lost their starting outfield, four pitchers and the middle-of-the-infield defense to graduation.

The Hawks have been battling youth, their opponents and Mother Nature — one game was snowed out while three others were rained out — early on as they dropped the first two games of the year.

Woodland fell, 3-1, to Oxford April 6 to open the season. Three days later, Torrington topped Woodland, 4-1.

In both games it was Woodland’s pitchers that provided a spark on the mound and at the plate.

Against Oxford, Tyler Boisvert delivered eight strikeouts on the mound to go along with a double and Woodland’s only RBI at the plate.

Brett Petruny pitched seven innings versus Torrington and gave up seven hits with two strikeouts. Petruny had a single and scored the team’s only run in the game.

The Hawks broke into the win column Wednesday defeating Wilby, 13-3.

Zack Bedryczuk pitched a four-hitter for the Hawks (1-2) with four strikeouts. Bedryczuk also scored three runs.

Boisvert hit a three-run home run and had four RBI to pace Woodland’s offense.

The weather issues have left teams across the state scrambling to get games in, and the Hawks are no different. The Wilby game was to the start of a stretch of four games in four days. The Hawks will visit Goodwin Tech on Thursday. Woodland will return home to face Derby on Friday before hosting Naugatuck on Saturday for a 10 a.m. game. Woodland will get one day to rest before hitting the road to take on Sacred Heart April 18.
