NEW HAVEN — The Naugatuck indoor track team continued its record-setting season as two more school marks fell at the State Open last Friday.

Mark Zamani ran to a fifth-place finish among the state’s best runners in the 1000 meters in a time of 2:33.85. He beat his seventh-ranked time by 3 seconds and set a new school record in the process.

Zamani qualified for the New England Regional Championships, which are Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

“Mark had a good day on the track,” Naugatuck head coach Ralph Roper said. “Anytime you achieve that kind of success going up against the best athletes in the state it’s a positive season and to break a school record in the process shows the kind of work that Mark has put into this season.”

The girls 4×200 relay team of Kyla Magalhaes, Ariana Alvarado, Jasmine Grey and Rachel Garcia finished 15th with a time of 1:50.59. The girls broke their own record they set in the Class L meet with the time.

“The relay team ran well but didn’t finish as good as they would have liked,” Roper said. “The girls were hoping to place higher and, even though they broke the school record again, going up against the best in the state is certainly a challenge.”

Alvarado, who came in ranked seventh with a time of 7.44 in the 55 meter dash, ran a 7.54 and missed qualifying for the finals by 0.5 seconds.

“Ariana was not at 100 percent but she gave it all she had and just missed out on going to the finals,” Roper added. “I think the kind of season we had bodes well as we now prepare for the outdoor season coming up in a few weeks.”
