Former Hawks, ‘Hounds standout on collegiate level

A slew of former local high school athletes competed at various colleges and universities throughout the region this spring with plenty of success. The following is a brief, alphabetical look at some of the notable local athletes and how they performed this season.

Unfortunately, there are more local college athletes than CN can easily track, so we apologize if not all are included (feel free to drop us a line if there’s an athlete we missed).

Eric Alfiere, a senior at UConn, placed third at the Big East Championships in the javelin with a throw of 59.16 meters. The former New England champion at Woodland earned a victory in the event at the UConn Men’s Dogfight in April with a career-best heave of 64.49 meters. He ended his career by competing in the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla.

Katie Alfiere, a sophomore at Quinnipiac, posted a 7-3 record in helping the Bobcats reach the Northeast Conference finals. She ranked seventh in the conference with a 2.45 ERA and was named NEC Pitcher of the Week on May 7. Alfiere also hit .230 with a homer and five RBI, and was part of the NCAA record-tying foursome that hit consecutive homers in April.

Natalia Carvalho, a sophomore at St. Peter’s, competed in mid-distance events and relays during the spring season. The former All-NVL athlete at Naugatuck was sixth in the 4-by-800 relay at the MAAC Championships and placed sixth in the 800 meters at the Roadrunner Express.

Martyann Chromik, a sophomore at Ithaca, was a short-distance runner for the team. The former All-NVL athlete at Naugatuck was second in the 4-by-400 relay at the ECAC Division III Championships. Her best finish in the 400 was fourth at the Oneonta State May Meet.

Steve Corbett, a senior at Post, led the Eagles in wins (four), innings (66.1), complete games (four), and strikeouts (52). The former Woodland standout had his best game of the season in his last career start, tossing a complete game, six-hitter against Philadelphia.

Jasmine Cribb, a junior at UConn, competed at several meets in the high jump for the Huskies. The former All-New England athlete at Naugatuck won the UConn Women’s All-Region Meet with a leap of 1.73 meters.

Jen Fredericks, a sophomore at Daniel Webster, appeared in every game for the Eagles’ lacrosse squad. The former Woodland basketball player was a valuable defensive player for the team, starting in 13 of the team’s 15 games.

Ryan Genua, a sophomore at Lesley, made contributions both on offense and on the mound. The former Woodland three-year starter led the team in innings pitched (51.1) and was 2-4 in seven starts. He also played outfield, where he racked up six RBI and four steals.

Corinna Hussey, a junior at Western Connecticut, helped the Colonials advance to the Little East Conference finals. The former Naugatuck standout appeared in 30 games, hitting .321 with 10 runs scored and seven steals.

Ryan Mariotti, a freshman at Centenary of New Jersey, saw spot action as a backup for the Cyclones. The former Woodland shortstop and outfielder appeared in 15 games and recorded the first two hits and first RBI of his career.

Mike Masulli, a freshman at Suffolk, was a valuable relief pitcher for the Rams. The former Woodland pitcher appeared in a team-high 10 games from the bullpen, posting a 1-0 record with a save in 16.2 innings. His 8.1 strikeouts per game were second best on the squad.

Rosa Moriello, a sophomore at Boston University, was a valuable long-distance runner for the Terriers. The former All-State athlete at Naugatuck finished second in the 5,000 at the America East Championships last month and placed ninth in her section at the Stanford Invitational.

Dan Park, a sophomore at Navy, competed in the long and triple jumps for the Midshipmen. The former All-State athlete at Woodland was consistently the best triple jumper for the team, taking third in the triple jump at the Army-Navy meet and another meet in March.

Josh Perry, a senior at Southern Connecticut, helped the Owls to their 20th consecutive Northeast-10 championship. The former All-New England athlete at Naugatuck earned All-New England honors in the 800 this spring with a second-place finish after winning the event at the league meet.

Tori Pisco, a sophomore at La Salle, competed in short- and mid-distance events and relays for the Explorers. The former All-New England athlete at Naugatuck set three career-best times this spring, placing in the top six in a number of individual and relay events, including a fifth-place finish in the 4-by-800 relay at the Atlantic 10 Championships.

Chris Savvidou, a sophomore at Central Connecticut, competed in short-distance and relays this spring for the Blue Devils. The former Woodland all-state athlete posted his best time of the season in the 400 at the Holy Cross Invitational, finishing 11th in 51.81 seconds.

Alana Wesche, a junior at New Haven, was the Chargers’ top pitcher, leading the team in nearly every statistical category. The former All-State pitcher at Naugatuck compiled a 16-10 record with a 2.72 ERA, striking out 92 in 164.2 innings pitched.

Amanze Williams, a freshman at UConn, competed in both the long and triple jumps for the Huskies. The former All-New England athlete at Naugatuck earned a pair of top-three finishes at the UConn Men’s Dogfight and competed in both the Big East and New England championships.
