Citizen’s News Sports presents its fall all-CN selections, 10 standout athletes from each of our two high schools.

Woodland

Football

Jack DeBiase: The junior running back led the Naugatuck Valley League with 1,376 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns. And he didn’t end the season badly either—he put up a 252-yard, four TD performance in the 55-32 win over Seymour.

Brandon Fowler: Woodland’s Mr. Everything did it all for the Hawks this year—he racked up 487 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, intercepted seven passes, and knocked home 34 of 36 PAT kicks.

Boys’ soccer

Steve Vaz: The senior captain helped lead a young Hawks team, which lost 10 seniors from a year ago, back to the Class M state tournament with a 6-9-1 overall record.

Girls’ soccer

Raven Palmerie: Thrust into the leader’s role as a junior, Palmerie led Woodland in scoring and helped the Hawks achieve a rather-unexpected 8-6-2 record and a berth in the Class M tourney, while also notching all-NVL honors.

Boys’ cross country

Kyle Cranney: The sophomore became one of the league’s top runners this season, finishing among the top 10 at both the NVL and Class M meets before posting a very respectable 103rd-place finish at the State Open.

Girls’ cross country

Brittany Albright: Albright repeated as an all-NVL selection, finishing fourth at the league championship. The senior also notched all-state honors, after her team-leading, sixth-place performance at the Class SS meet.

Crystal Steinfeld: Right on Albright’s heels all year long, the junior also earned both all-NVL and all-state distinctions after a fifth-place finish at NVLs and seventh-place showing at states.

Girls’ swimming and diving

Katie-Jean Hinckley: The sophomore continued her already-record-breaking career at Woodland, setting two more school records while helping her squad finish a program-best third at the NVL championships. She also placed among the top 10 in two events at the Class S meet.

Volleyball

Jess Patrizi: A New Haven Register all-area selection and the NVL tournament’s most valuable player, the junior routinely stuffed the stat sheet with double-doubles in almost every match. The Hawks’ lone non-senior starter also helped lead her squad to the NVL title and the quarterfinals of the Class M tourney.

Steph Badale: Often the recipient of a Patrizi pass, Badale cashed in with a kill more often than not. The senior was one of the hardest hitters in the league and made the all-NVL tournament squad.

Naugatuck

Football

Dan Mariano: The senior captain was a constant leader on an injury-plagued Greyhounds squad. Though sometimes injured himself, Mariano often sparked the defense with bone-crushing hits and helped lead the Hounds to an upset of NVL champ Holy Cross.

Boys’ soccer

Tiago Martins: Martins, only a junior, was one of the most exciting players in the NVL. He racked up double-digit goals—by the fourth match of the season. He led the Hounds in goals and helped Naugy to its fourth straight NVL crown.

Manny Nobre: If it wasn’t Martins scoring, you could be pretty sure the league tournament MVP was picking up the slack. The senior was right behind Martins in scoring and became one of few athletes in school history to win four NVL titles.

Girls’ soccer

Stephanie Santos: The junior led the Greyhounds in scoring and cemented her season with a hat trick in Naugy’s impressive, 5-1 win over Torrington in the NVL championship.

Danielle Charette: The senior also did her part in leading Naugatuck to the league title, as she was named the NVL tournament’s most valuable player, following a strong showing throughout, including a pair of assists in the championship.

Boys’ cross country

Nick Moriello: Rosa’s little brother established his own name at Naugy, finishing second at the NVL championship, followed by a respectable 19th-place showing at the Class L meet.

Erik DeSousa: DeSousa also earned all-NVL honors after eking out a fourth-place performance at the NVL championship. The freshman established himself as one of the league’s best throughout the year, and also finished 36th in Class L, tops among ninth-graders.

Girls’ cross country

Rosa Moriello: Do we really need to explain? Moriello won her third-straight NVL championship, finished third in Class L to achieve all-state honors again, placed fifth at the State Open, and was ninth-best at the New England championship.

Girls’ swimming and diving

Nicole Javins: The junior competed in four races at the Class L championship, including finishing 15th in the 200-yard freestyle and 16th in the 500 free, as well as ninth in the 200 free relay and 16th in the 400 free relay.

Volleyball

Alexis Granahan: The senior was a floor leader for the Hounds, helping guide her squad to the NVL tournament semifinals. She was also named to the all-NVL tournament team.
