Robert A. Cole Little League is off to a hot start in the District 3 Major Baseball tournament.
Cole is 2-0 after defeating Prospect, 3-2, on Tuesday night in Naugatuck. Last Sunday, Cole beat Peter J. Foley Little League, 14-8, in the tournament-opener for both teams in Seymour.
Zach Laput won on the mound and homered for Cole in the win over Foley. Stephen Persico hit two three-run homers, while Dante DiRubba and Kyle Bshara also went deep.
Justin Ramos had three hits for Foley, including an RBI double. Nick Grant had a run-scoring double and two singles, Ryan Brink (single and RBI double) and Peter Mullin (double) had hits for Foley.
Cole will play again July 5 against Shelton-National Little League at Sunnyside Field in Shelton. Game time is set for 10 a.m.
Peter J. Foley is scheduled to play Ansonia on Thursday with the winner advancing to play Derby at Union City Little League on July 5 at 12:30 p.m.
Union City Little League will host Prospect in an elimination game on July 5 at 10 a.m. The winner will advance to play in Beacon Falls on July 6 at noon against the loser of the Shelton-American/Seymour game.
Union City softball competes in district play
The Union City Little League Major Girls all-star team dropped games to Ansonia and Seymour last week. UCLL’s Haley Deitelbaum and Nicole Mercer each had three hits total in the two games. Union City turned three double plays over the two games. Seymour won the district title with a 10-0 win over Ansonia on June 29.
