NEW MILFORD — Beacon Falls resident and Sacred Heart University junior Brittany Battis won a pair of gold medals in Monday’s gymnastics competition at the annual Nutmeg State Games at New Milford High School.

Battis, 19, competes with the Pioneers’ club gymnastics team after pole vaulting her freshman year. She decided to enter the Nutmeg State Games with a friend just to keep her skills sharp.

“The Nutmeg State Games are kind of like Connecticut’s own Summer Olympics,” Battis said. “My friend and I did it just to stay in shape and have something to train for in the summer.”

It turned out to be a golden decision.

Battis competed on the eighth of 10 skill levels and won both the balance beam and floor exercise in her division. She received an 8.5 on her beam routine while her floor routine netted her a 9.3.

“I was just counting on not making any big errors because of my experience, and I just pretty much did that,” Battis said.

Not too bad for a gymnast who thinks her best days might be behind her.

“It feels like I can’t do half the stuff I used to,” Battis said.

But it was good enough for gold.
