NAUGATUCK — The Greyhounds welcome Torrington to Veterans Field Friday at 7 p.m. in the 2009 home opener. Last week, the Red Raiders looked like an offensive juggernaut in a 39-0 track-meet-of-a-win over Platt Tech.

Naugatuck head coach Rob Plasky made the trip to T-town and came back impressed: “To see them in the spread is like, ‘Whoa!’” he said. “Their quarterback is very, very athletic.”

“Their quarterback” is senior Chris DeBerry, who rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores came from 45-plus yards out, meaning the Hounds must wrap him up quickly or risk a huge gain.

They also can’t forget about sophomore running back Brendan Lytton, who racked up 74 yards and two TDs—on just six carries.

Plasky said he’s looking forward to facing second-year Torrington coach Dan Dunaj, a familiar foe whom Plasky regards highly.

“Dan’s a hard worker,” he said. “We’ve been going against each other in this league for 16 years, only interrupted when he went to Southern [Connecticut State University] for four years to be their strength and conditioning coach.”

Line coach Chico Echeverria added that the opening-night upset of Seymour was great, but NHS must guard against a letdown in game two.

“We don’t need that right now,” he said.
