Mo’s Moments

Freshman paves the way

Naugatuck freshman Chris Akinduro has made the most out of his opportunities in the state tournament. Akinduro scored both goals in last Wednesday’s 2-0 second-round win over East Hartford. He also drew penalties in the box that the Greyhounds converted into goals on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals and semifinals to help Naugatuck reach the championship game.

Leaving it all out there

Naugatuck senior Jayla Piazza led the Greyhounds with 19 digs as she left it all on the court in a 3-2 loss to Stratford in the second round of the Class L volleyball tournament last week.

Going the distance

Woodland junior Mike Farina showed that he has the speed and the agility to be a weapon for the Hawks football team. In a 49-12 win over Kennedy last Thursday, Farina returned a kickoff 90 yards to the house.

Go-to guy

Naugatuck senior Vinny Knupp is always around the action. On Saturday, he scored two first-half goals in the Greyhounds’ 4-2 win over Wilbur Cross in the Class LL quarterfinals. Knupp then scored the only goal in the semifinals on a penalty kick on Monday to send Naugy to the state championship game.

Bookend touchdowns

Naugatuck sophomore Malachi Gatison scored the first touchdown of the game on Saturday on a 15-yard pass play and scored the final touchdown of the game on a 27-yard run in a convincing 38-0 victory over Waterbury Career.
