Record-breaking performance

Woodland sophomore Jake Arisian broke the school record in the 500 freestyle with a blistering pace of 5:04.10 during a meet against Torrington Jan. 7.

Creating quite a buzz

Naugatuck sophomore Sarah Macary scored a game-high 25 points in the Greyhounds’ 55-46, overtime win over Torrington Jan. 3, but no shot was bigger than the 15-footer she hit at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Team-high

Woodland junior Nate Smith scored a team-high 17 points in a 74-65 loss to St. Paul on Jan. 3.

Firing away

Woodland’s Andra Bojka had it going on from the perimeter in the Hawks’ 57-27 win over Waterbury Career Jan. 7. The sophomore hit eight shots for a game-high 16 points.

Leader of the pack

Naugatuck’s Ese Onakpoma led the Greyhounds in their 74-50 win over Wilby Jan. 7. The sophomore made 11 shots, including three 3-pointers, to score a team-high 26 points.

Naugy Notes

Boys swimming

After a lengthy break after the first meet, Naugatuck was set to get back in the pool Friday against Kennedy. The Greyhounds are scheduled to face Crosby-Waterbury Career on Tuesday, before their first home meet Thursday against Wilby-Kaynor Tech.

Indoor track

The Greyhounds finished in the top ten of eight events at the Elm City Invitational Jan. 4. Jonny Volpe and Tyvias Dippelhofer led the boys team. Volpe placed fourth in the 600 (1:27.60). Dippelhofer threw a personal-best 41 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the shot put to finish fifth. The boys 1600 sprint medley team of Ethan Garcia, Justin Carroll, Matt Kilmer and Brendon Soubannarath finished sixth (4:09.83). Kylie Neretich and Allison Murphy led the girls team. For the third meet in a row, Neretich placed first in the 55 hurdles (9.06). Murphy finished sixth in the 600 (1:46.16) and ninth in the 300 (44.34). The girls 4×200 relay foursome of Emma Sonski, Rachel Huculak, Liz Krooss and Neretich placed fifth (1:54.06). The 4×400 relay team of Murphy, Lauren Sonski, Tori Lawson and Huculak also finished fifth (4:28.79). Naugatuck will continue to prepare for the Naugatuck Valley League championships Feb. 3 in New Haven.

Wrestling

Naugatuck junior Logan Wilcox had a strong showing at the Bristol Central Invitational Jan 4. Wilcox pinned Glastonbury’s Mike Maciolek in 52 seconds to win his first bout in the 182-class. In the next match, Wilcox earned a 14-6 major decision over Darnel Benoit of Harding. Wilcox then dropped a decision in 4:38 to Marcus Nieves and was pinned by Plainville’s Esteban Torres in 1:17 in a match for third place.

Boys swimming

Woodland improved to 2-0 with a 94-83 win over Torrington Jan 7. Jake Arisian led the way for the Hawks. Arisian won the 50 freestyle (23.47) and set a new school record the 500 freestyle (5:04.10). Aiden Kennedy won the 200 freestyle (2:06.80) and Noah Scott finished first in the 100 freestyle (54.47). The 200 medley relay foursome of Arisian, Zacary Bertrand, Scott and Ryan Curtin finished first (1:51.44), as did the 200 freestyle relay team of Curtin, Tyler Cyr, Scott and Arisian (1:44.06). Woodland is set scheduled to face Crosby on Friday and Seymour on Tuesday.

Indoor track

Woodland put up some impressive numbers at the Elm City Invitational Jan. 4. Jasmine Michie and Hailey Bernier led the girls team. Michie took second in the shot put (36-8) and Bernier placed second in the pole vault (8-6). The girls sprint medley relay team of Sara Alessio, Rebecca Benoit, Jaden Young and Emma Slavin finished third (4:44.96). The 4×800 relay squad of Jill Brotherton, Kasey Beard, Kate Foley and Chloe Poulos finished 10th (10:47.57). Eric Meade finished seventh in the 55 hurdles (9.04) and Cole Barrows cleared 11 feet to place ninth in the pole vault to lead the boys. The boys 1600 sprint medley relay team of Alex Farr, Ervin Owusu, Luca Cambra and Chase Young finished ninth (4:12.11). Woodland will continue to prepare for the Naugatuck Valley League championships Feb. 3 in New Haven.

Wrestling

Woodland’s team of one is set to compete at the Lawless Invitational in Canton Jan. 11 and face Oxford on Wednesday.
