No. 3 Woodland and No. 5 Naugatuck both fell in the quarterfinals of the NVL girls soccer tournament.

Woodland lost, 3-1, to No. 6 Oxford at Woodland Regional High School.

Aries Bell gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead about five minutes into the game, but the lead was short-lived.

Oxford’s Grace Mahmood tied the game 10 minutes later. Kate Wickenhsiesser put Oxford ahead late in the first half and scored again in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Naugatuck lost, 2-1, on the road to No. 4 Wolcott.

Wolcott’s Brooke Tracey scored 5:19 into the match to give the Eagles the early momentum and help the team settle into the game. Ella Vaughn put Wolcott up 2-0 with 2:49 left before halftime, off a corner kick by Samantha Riviezzo.

The Greyhounds weren’t ready to throw in the towel, keeping pressure on Wolcott during the second half.

Paige Cruz scored on an arching kick from the left corner with 10:31 left in regulation, but Wolcott held on the rest of the way.

Naugatuck coach Lisa Mariano was proud of her team for not folding after falling down 2-0 after 40 minutes.

“Although I don’t ever want to lose a game, there’s a lot we can pull away from this,” Mariano said. “Urgency was definitely one of the things along with staying composed when we have to play urgent.”
